7 Quick Takes (Volume 1)

I’m taking part in 7 Quick Takes with Conversion Diary.

(I love me some Conversion Diary.)

I love this idea. I get to spout off SEVEN random things. I NEED this in my life. There is so much going on in this (newly brunette) head of mine, and it needs OUT.

~1~

A blog friend of mine wrote a post that has to be shared. I read it over and over and I’m thinking it needs to go no other place than PUBLISHED (like in a book). If you happen to be a mother (who at times feels like there is NO TIME) and you have even an inkling of a belief in God, you WILL NOT be sorry if you click HERE and read this post (over and over).

~2~

I laugh so hard when I watch Ellen and she does that thing where she puts a mic in someone’s ear and then tells them what to say. (Like when she sent Dennis Qauid to Starbucks and had him shouting, “Dennis Quaid is heeere.”) Yesterday she did this with an actor who was fooling a bunch of people into believing he was their tour guide. They thought they’d be learning some show business ins and outs, checking out sets and such. But he just randomly talked about other things that Ellen spoke into his ear from her studio. He started to tell the tourists how he gave blood. Then Ellen told him to say that the person who took his blood looked like Jennifer Aniston. He didn’t hear her correctly so he said, “My blood smelled just like Jennifer Aniston.” Oh, the looks on the faces of the innocent, unsuspecting tourists…

~3~

Asher is doing quite well these days. (For those that don’t know, Asher has hydrocephalus and had a brain shunt put in recently.) He’s thriving and climbing and goofing off as all one and a half year olds should. And we’re thankful. I’m still a bit paranoid, wondering if everything is working as it should. He’ll have a check-up later this month.
(Just as I typed this, Asher walked up and in a frustrated little voice, he said, “OWIE,” while pushing on the shunt on the side of his head. This happens here and there and I want to throw him in the car and drive frantically to the ER. But I’ve learned he can be doing just fine and be a bit uncomfortable at the same time. I haven’t really figured out how to work my way through daily life with that knowledge, but I’m trying.)

~4~

“7 Quick Takes” makes me think “takes” like in the movies. And that makes me think of photography. (my train of thought doesn’t always make perfect sense.) So here’s a random photo for #4:

Miles with one of Asher’s gifts at Christmas. A gift he went on to steal and make his own.
~5~

I always thought my boys would be the only ones that weren’t into guns, or pretend guns, or guns of any possible kind. Oh, how naive I was! I’m pretty sure boys are born with a propensity to point anything that’s shaped even remotely straight and yell, “BANG!” Even my perfect angels. Annoying, but true.

~6~

Back when the lovely readers of this here blog asked questions, one of them was from LisAway. She wanted to know what my favorite cereal is. She said that you can tell a lot about a person by their favorite cereal. I agree. The truth of the matter is that I rarely eat cereal. What does THAT say about me??? Each morning, I eat eggs, toast, and/or oatmeal. That’s the truth. But let’s just say, for fun, that I’ve run out of bread and eggs. I’d eat Lucky Charms if someone forced me to do so. And I’d like it.

~7~

I’ve recently received some bloggy awards. For today, since I’m trying to be quick, I’ll start with Lisa at Crazy Adventures in Parenting. Lisa received a handful of awards and she said I could choose whichever one I wanted (isn’t that nice?) Thank you, Lisa! I chose this one:

In receiving it, I am to name 5 things I would want with me if stranded on a deserted island.
1) My family (obviously) 2) A really, really loooong book. 3) A reaaaally fat notebook 4) A pen that never runs out of ink. 5) McDonald’s (I’m pretty sure we’re going to die anyway, so I figure we should love the fries while we can.) I am to pass this award on to five people, but I’m really bad at following the rules. I love a bazillion of you and also, that’s waaaay too much linkage for me (my boys are being ignored as we speak.) I will now give this award to Pam of Beyond Just Mom. We’re newish blog friends and I love her blog, she’s a great writer. I love how she thinks. So there you have it.

Did anyone notice that by doing 7 Quick(ish) Takes I got to:
-answer one of the questions I still hadn’t answered,
-take care of some award business,
-update you on Asher,
-and talk about random things like Ellen.
All in one post! I’m hooked! I’m going to do this every Friday. Go check out Conversion Diary. Jennifer is a Weblog Awards Finalist for good reason. Happy Friday!

I did love this. Mostly because it was all over the place and seemed like we were having a real conversation! I do love Ellen. I wish she came on at 10:00 p.m. so I could see her. (No, I do not have TiVo – I am deprived). And I am so glad Asher is doing well. I’m off to check out your links you left us. Have a great weekend.

Brooke January 9, 2009 at 9:53 am

This is really fun! I love Ellen, too. I’m going to check out the links. What a blessing that Asher is doing well.

It’s like sitting down together over a cup of cocoa. Very fun! I would be hard pressed to say which Is my fave cereal but mostly b/c cold cereal contains wheat and I am pretty much in love with anything containing wheat right now. I’m pretty sure, tho, that oatmeal, my usual breakfast, is considered cereal. Just saying . .

I love learning more about you! And I love all the sugery cereals, especially Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

Carol @SheLives January 9, 2009 at 11:00 am

How clever are you! You just killed four birds with a single stone.

Bird killer! (heh)

Off to check out Conversion Diary.

I just finished some eggs. They were still kind of dippy. I like them dippy. Do you like them dippy?

Annette Lyon January 9, 2009 at 11:18 am

So efficient!

My son was totally into swords instead of knives. Anything remotely long and skinny was a sword. I thought he’d grow out of it. Nope.

Octamom January 9, 2009 at 11:32 am

Nicely, randomly done!

Blessings!

Lara January 9, 2009 at 11:34 am

Love it! Seven quick takes IS the perfect way to get a lot of things in. You’re such a genius. :)

Lisa @ Crazy Adventures in Parenting January 9, 2009 at 11:37 am

You rock! I like this idea :) And you’re welcome :)

Elizabeth January 9, 2009 at 11:57 am

That was so fun to read! I imagine you talk the same way:)

FYI, since you were talking about blog awards, I gave you one today. I never know what to think about them, but I do know that you deserve it. Have a great Friday!

Corey January 9, 2009 at 11:59 am

But would you not agree that McDonald’s fries are not as good now that there are no trans fats involved? I want my old fries back. Without the trans fats, I’d rather go without.

Why can’t people just go away and let me eat myself to death in peace?

Becky January 9, 2009 at 12:11 pm

I want MY blood to smell like Jennifer Aniston. (But only if she smells good.)

The Mom January 9, 2009 at 12:42 pm

Ellen is my FAVE, and I would be the worst worry wort about a shunt esp. in such a young little guy! Hang in there you are amazing!

Jenn January 9, 2009 at 1:35 pm

I have 3 boys and I truly believe the gun thing is ingrained in them somehow!

Kazzy January 9, 2009 at 1:37 pm

I enjoy these quick takes sometimes. And I usually laugh out loud at Ellen. She really is a riot! So…a hot breakfast kind of gal, huh? I might have guessed that!

Tooj January 9, 2009 at 2:07 pm

I’m eye to eye with you on that gun thing. I thought I’d be good and make sure the whole bang bang point a thing wasn’t in my home. Yeah….I got overruled by “boythink”.

charrette January 9, 2009 at 2:13 pm

Ellen was my favorite Academy Award host ever. vacuuming? Hilarious! I love her!

And some morning I’d love to come have Lucky Charms with you. (even though I usually eat eggs and toast too.) It would be frivolous and fun.

Speaking of toast, and also of boys, we ran a strictly no gun household…and then I realized my toddler was hewing his TOAST into the shape of a gun and shouting “Bang!” Boys will be boys.

That Girl in Brazil January 9, 2009 at 2:15 pm

I also a huge fan of Ellen – and you, lady. Rockage all the way.

Growin' with it! January 9, 2009 at 2:22 pm

i watched that yesterday on ellen. it was hilarious. umm and the expression and look in your sons eyes with those toy keys says a lot about boys and their obsessions with “guns”…and well, cars!

Leigh January 9, 2009 at 3:22 pm

awesome post!

Erin January 9, 2009 at 3:25 pm

I’ve never watched Ellen. Apparently I’m missing out!

I’m so glad Asher is doing well.

Kate Wicker January 9, 2009 at 3:29 pm

Nice to “meet” you as well. Great post!

3 Bay B Chicks January 9, 2009 at 5:54 pm

I love that you watch Ellen. Isn’t she a hoot? Occasionally, if the kids are up from their nap and I have Ellen on, we sing and dance when she does. It makes for some pretty fun moments in my house.

I was very glad to read that Asher is doing well. I had been wondering, but didn’t want to pry, which is a bit of an oxymoron for the blogosphere, isn’t it? :)

Enjoy your weekend!

Carolyn January 9, 2009 at 6:11 pm

Thanks for the tip; I really loved the post you highlit. You do seem to get around to all the best places!

Also, I never eat cereal either. At least, not anymore. If I’m going to eat breakfast, I want it to be hearty.

maggie January 9, 2009 at 7:16 pm

I would eat cereal for breakfast lunch and dinner if I weren’t doing the [stupid!] low carb thing. I love cereal. Sigh.

MommyTime January 9, 2009 at 9:14 pm

Just so you know you’re not alone on this one: I’m sorry to tell you, re the gun thing, that my son has been known to cut his morning french toast into strips that he could then raise and point as his sister for the express purpose of exclaiming “pew! pew! pew!” (i.e. gun shooting noise) Apparently, it is not possible to banish all potentially weaponizable objects from one’s home without starving one’s children to death.

Sabrina January 9, 2009 at 9:24 pm

I just had dinner with you! It was fun! Tra la la la la!

Betty January 10, 2009 at 12:43 am

I loved that post of Jess’s as well. She had such a beautiful mind and words.

Marivic_Little GrumpyAngel January 10, 2009 at 3:24 am

Wow, what an awesome blog idea, to cover as much in just one post.

I’m glad to know Asher is doing well. Still can’t imagine what that’s like for you with that worry always, always back there somewhere even when you know you’re not supposed to.

Um, how do you find so many neat blogs?

LisAway January 10, 2009 at 5:22 am

If you haven’t seen Ellen’s “Here and Now” get your hands on it and WATCH.

And Thanks for answering my question. I’ve been waiting ever day. . . :) And I think it’s CRAZY that you don’t eat cereal much! I think that makes you a health nut. And it also means you are missing 8 essential vitamins and minerals.

Kethry January 10, 2009 at 4:13 pm

What a great post. I always laugh when I come here. I mean, when you want me to laugh. I mean, I don’t laugh at you. … I’ll stop now.

But I’ve been meaning to tell you, that I love the newly brunette look. Its looks very good on you.

Melanie J January 10, 2009 at 8:42 pm

Wow, you described my breakfast routine and preferences perfectly, right down to the Lucky Charms. I should not be surprised as I feel you often write what’s in my brain, only you do it better than I could.

Glad Asher’s better!

Oh, and I’m probably going to try to see Ellen next month. I’ll wave to you from the audience if I get in.
