Dear Katie,

I am no longer fashionable. I don’t really know that I ever was. But I do realize you are a bit of a fashion icon, and I wanted to tell you we finally have something in common in this regard. I used to roll my jeans too! It started around 1985, I believe. (Were you born?) I would fold my jeans over at the ankles as tightly as I could and then roll them up, just like you!

The only problem with this was trying to keep them that way. Do you struggle with this too? Like when you sit down, do they ride up a little higher on your calf and sort of pop open, leaving you to have to work really hard again?

I hated that.

You are so cute. I think I’ve been subconsciously trying to be more like you. I even colored my hair and then cut it shorter. Now I realize maybe I was trying to copy you.

And now LOOK, you’ve gone and copied ME. Are we kindred spirits or WHAT?

I suppose I could start rolling my pants again, but I’ve already done it and I didn’t really like it the first time, so I think I’ll bow out. I am impressed at how you’re pulling this off though, I do have to say. Somehow you still look cute, even with your jeans like that.

Rock on, sister. Rock on.

Oh! And give my love to Suri. Tell her that Asher still has a bottle sometimes too. It’ll be our little secret. (;

Your friend,
Heather

He, he. Where do you come up with this stuff? :)

Mrs. Dunbar January 28, 2009 at 5:08 pm

It’s been a while since I’ve been over here. I don’t know why, I mean your blog is at the TOP of my sidebar. But, anywhoo, life happens I guess. Glad to see you are all fine and that your wit is still in its prime. I love how your brain works.

KATIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MY FAVORITE CELEB EVER!!!!!!!!

SHE CAN DO NO WRONG….NONE!!!

happygeek January 28, 2009 at 5:33 pm

I for one was delighted to see her bringing back pegging. Gonna save all us shorties all kinds of hemming.
Katie is my new hero. ‘Cept her hubbies’a weird-o but I guess we can’t have it all.

Kristina P. January 28, 2009 at 5:39 pm

These are also Tom’s pants. Delightful.

Heidi Ashworth January 28, 2009 at 5:42 pm

You are so funny! I am way older than you and have noticed that those despised fashions of my youth keep coming back. Those who bring them back are too darn young to remember them–perhaps they see them in pictures and think it is cute vintage look. Only, that would make me vintage, too. I don’t relish that feeling. (Fashions rotate every 20 years. So, we are getting the 80’s looks now–just like we had the 70’s look in the 90’s and will have the 90’s look in the coming teens. It’s obnoxious).

FLASHBACK from high school! AAAACK!

Corey January 28, 2009 at 5:49 pm

Yes, also those are men’s jeans, are they not? I went through that phase too…

Have not gone through the “let the husband mind control me” phase yet… I think I’ll skip that one.

Brooke January 28, 2009 at 6:01 pm

Please, oh please tell me this isn’t in again. I really hope to never go back to this. Though, leg warmers are back. So maybe this is, too. Blech.

Rebecca January 28, 2009 at 6:07 pm

I refuse to roll my pants like that. It makes my ankles feel claustrophobic.

Erin January 28, 2009 at 6:11 pm

I used to roll my pant legs like this too. Until we had a foreign exchange student from France come and live with us for a month, and she told me it was completely unfashionable in France. I stopped doing it that day.

Kelline January 28, 2009 at 6:23 pm

I rolled my pants too, I never would have thought I was fashionable! Wow thanks Heather and Kate!

Debbie January 28, 2009 at 6:24 pm

She has started slipping a little in the fashion department, hasn’t she? Want to know a secret? It makes me like her:)

♥georgie♥ January 28, 2009 at 6:32 pm

LOL….LOVE it!!! I rolled my jeans like that too….of course now it wouldnt look right on a 38yr old married mother of 3

Kate Coveny Hood January 28, 2009 at 7:03 pm

Pegged jeans are a style that I would gladly forget ever happened to me…and maybe the white tights.

Kazzy January 28, 2009 at 7:15 pm

Very funny stuff! Looks like she pulled her clothes from under the bed and threw ’em on really fast. I must admit I get envious of people who can turn a bit of a sloppy look into something other people think is stylish. When I do that I just look sloppy.

a Tonggu Momma January 28, 2009 at 7:18 pm

Snort. And anytime I see Katie, I always think of Bossy’s post about Tom, Katie and Oprah. Did you ever see it?

http://littlurl.com/xg0a5

Funny stuff.

kel January 28, 2009 at 7:53 pm

If I did that, my girlfriends would laugh their asses off!! Put they look cute on here! What’s next scrunchy socks and la gear?

RosyRose January 28, 2009 at 8:19 pm

love that! I so know what you mean about her trying to be like you! Pegged jeans and all!:)
I am waiting for the BIG hair reappearance than it’s for sure…. we are back!!!!
LOL!

Muthering Heights January 28, 2009 at 8:46 pm

It’s nice to have a kindred spirit out there!

Becky January 28, 2009 at 9:39 pm

Darn those celebs! They can get away with anything. Not that, you know, I personally have ever had bad fashion sense. Nope, not me. Never.

Megan@SortaCrunchy January 28, 2009 at 9:39 pm

I totally thought the exact same thing (in a much less funny way) when photos of her rockin that look first started surfacing.

MoziEsmé January 28, 2009 at 10:18 pm

Very cute and scary! I refuse to go thru those rolls again. Tho it worked for me – at 5’1″ I got to wear a lot of pants I never could’ve otherwise (I don’t sew).

Melanie J January 28, 2009 at 10:24 pm

I remember seeing this picture and thinking, WTH? Doesn’t she pay stylists who tell her NOT to do that? And then I put on my oversized t-shirt and formula coated sweat pants and felt really cool because I didn’t pay ANYONE to tell me to dress like that.

Tooj January 28, 2009 at 11:09 pm

I have loved Katie since the moment I laid eyes on Dawson’s Creek. And tight rolling is back? Please help me understand. Although…how in the world does she make it look semi-cute???? It’s not rolled TIGHT….I think. It’s a loose roll.

Abra January 28, 2009 at 11:09 pm

I used to tight roll too… I remember distinctly being in Grade 5 and this one girl was still “Farmer Rolling” her jeans – oh and plus she had Wide Leg Jeans – like who wore those anymore? Anyways, I often think of that girl and wonder what ever happened to Cindy? I hope she’s doing really awesome and is a Fashion Icon Queen.
Just to show all of us who had made fun of her way back when.
So I say:
Go Katie and Go Cindy!

Kim January 28, 2009 at 11:47 pm

My first thought upon seeing that pictures was, WOW! I can’t believe that tight-rolling is coming back. I’ll have to let Jeremy know, he’ll be thrilled. He was quite the tight-roller in his day ;)

Kristen January 28, 2009 at 11:50 pm

You crack me up!! Yes, we totally did the tuck and roll, too. We called it “pegging” our jeans. The tighter the better.

You and Kate are so BFF right now.

Evolving Mommy Catherine January 28, 2009 at 11:55 pm

Hilarious. I don’t understand some “fashion” choices at all.

Heidi January 29, 2009 at 12:39 am

I’m so glad that this coming back in style. I was a real expert.

LisAway January 29, 2009 at 4:00 am

This is so funny, Heather. I just LOVE the visual of the roll popping open when you sit down. OH HOW I REMEMBER! It was really an art to be able to roll well.

Sabrina January 29, 2009 at 8:18 am

I still tight roll my jeans. I figure when you tight roll your jeans, you look like you have extra skinny calves and really big hips and thighs! My favorite look!!!!

Sarah@Life in the Parsonage January 29, 2009 at 9:59 am

I even rolled the jeans that had zippers on the sides…I probably have scars on my ankles ;)

radioactive girl January 29, 2009 at 3:06 pm

This is genius. And I think you are right, I don’t think she was born yet when you (and I) did that.

Rach@In His Hands January 29, 2009 at 7:18 pm

Ah, the fold and roll…those were the days.
You are a crack up, girlfriend!

Jessica January 29, 2009 at 8:19 pm

oh no, I heard that Katie did it but now I see it’s true. . . . yup, this is probably the only thing I will ever have in common with Katie.

Jenn January 29, 2009 at 9:36 pm

Oh my goodness! That was too funny! Looking back I see how dorky rolling our jeans that tight was!

Eowyn January 29, 2009 at 11:01 pm

Really? Rolled jeans?

!!!

Kristen Andrews January 30, 2009 at 5:54 pm

Katie has actually started a huge trend, I write fashion articles and just did a article on it. I use to “peg” my jeans, and it takes talent to get it to stay! Great blog going to start following you.

Emily January 31, 2009 at 10:08 pm

Loved this post! It’s nice to know I’m not the only one embracing the 80’s fashion comeback!

BTW, I’m Emily, Melanie’s friend with the screaming baby. He has calmed down some, but he can still hold his own.

she should totally give you props for this. For her to blatently copy you in public no less is downright shameful.

Maybe one day she will end up married to a total freak who jumps on peoples couches…

hey- stranger things have happened…

CC February 1, 2009 at 4:25 pm

Yes rock on. And I’m pretty sure Katie wasn’t around well us “cool gals” were rolling up our jeans and wearing 10 pairs of socks.

But Katie, is OK to scream in childbirth. Really. I’m sure it really hurts. It’s OK.
