Motherhood

For me, it looks just like this…

Just one thrilling load of laundry and bag of garbage at a time!

Or not.

Motherhood

For me,
it looks like this,

“GOOD JOB, HONEY!” (high-pitched and syrupy sweet)
Or not.
(he may look terrified, but he’s just really really excited)

Motherhood
.
.
.
Maybe it looks more like this…

Messy
Battles
Push
Pull
Mad
Kisses
Laughter
Sacrifice
Thankful
In love
Worry
Connection
Teaching
Guilt
Prayer
Giving
Peace
Joy
Fear
Me
Them
Us
Always

However it looks,
losing my cool or not,
looking my best or never,
feeling down or up,
messy house,
the good, the bad, the ugly,
the beautiful, the mundane, the milestones,
the grind, and all the clashing emotions…

Good.

It might not always be beautiful, but at least you have that SWEET apron! Seriously!! :)

Great post. :)

Kimberly October 21, 2009 at 3:36 pm

Love, love, love. It's such a hodge-podge, isn't it? Yet so, so good.

Corinne October 21, 2009 at 3:38 pm

I can't stop giggling over that first picture!
Great post :)

C @ Kid Things October 21, 2009 at 3:51 pm

You look homicidal in that first picture.

Heather of the EO October 21, 2009 at 3:55 pm

That homicidal thing totally cracked me up.

It is pretty dangerous for everyone around me…having me twirl and kick my leg up behind me like that (all while holding things) Just think what could happen. I mean, just today I tried to carry Asher, two big bags and a cup of popcorn. Then I remembered that I'm hobbling due to a broken toe so I started dropping everything (including my child, whose head hit the wall)
Yeah, I'm a total rock star.

Becca October 21, 2009 at 3:57 pm

Yes. Exactly. Amen. You're talking to me. (And I want your apron. And probably your sweater.)

Kori October 21, 2009 at 4:46 pm

Lolli October 21, 2009 at 8:37 pm

Yes, motherhood looks a lot like that at my house, too. Although, I don't know if I've ever looked quite so happy while doing laundry. I love that picture, by the way!!

april October 21, 2009 at 9:14 pm

Love this.

Susan Berlien (warmchocmilk) October 21, 2009 at 10:10 pm

You got it right on, Heather. And funny that you linked to that post (which I have read and I think you wrote just for me) on the same day I wrote my not living up post. When you stopped over this monring and I was still in my PJ's at 10:30 and toys covered the living room floor, the TV was on and Weston was eating cocoa puffs on the living room rug…I thought..she's never going to speak to me again….and then 10 minutes later you called…it it wasn't to tell me you thought I was crazy.

Thank you.
P.S. I will get that book back to you. I read some of it…but it does make me feel a little guilty..I just don't think I'm ready for it…yet.

mama-face October 21, 2009 at 11:17 pm

I LOVE that first picture!!! so much!!! I don't even really know why; it just speaks to me.

Lovely post.

Cynthia October 21, 2009 at 11:27 pm

That pretty much sums it up! You look adorable in the June Clever apron! I will confess it took me a minute to realize the white 'fluff' was a garbage bag. I thought on first glance your were flashing some petticoat or something at your hubs indicating another part of Motherhood altogether- that of wife and the accompanying priveledges! LOL!

H-Mama October 21, 2009 at 11:40 pm

you are adorable. ;)

Jamie @ Six Bricks High October 22, 2009 at 12:44 am

Well said! Motherhood…it isn't perfect but it is good.

charrette October 22, 2009 at 1:28 am

That was hilarious! And wonderful. And true.

I need that apron. I'm pretty sure I could conquer the world (and maybe twirl and kick my leg behind me) if I had that apron.

You are adorable. And your honesty and grace with respect to your imperfections somehow makes you, well…perfect.

Kazzy October 22, 2009 at 3:12 am

You are soooo Donna Reed and June Cleaver! Motherhood really is messy and pretty awesome all at once!

5thsister October 22, 2009 at 4:19 am

And we have a winner! Email me your address so I can send you my spice! polly@5thsister.com

Thanks Heather!

Kristen@nosmallthing October 22, 2009 at 6:58 am

Oh my God I love the pictures!!! So funny. Especially the one with trash and laundry. That is me to a T.

I love the words you used to describe motherhood.

Adventures In Babywearing October 22, 2009 at 8:06 am

It's all so perfect.

Steph

Tooj October 22, 2009 at 11:48 am

OMG, I was JUST doing the laundry trash dance LAST NIGHT!!!!!!!! Of course, I had my high heels on too. Did you?

Motherhood to me sometimes feels like this:

should i
could i
will i
would i
maybe
i don't know
yes?
no?
huh?

Sabrina October 22, 2009 at 12:54 pm

You are adorable! Can't wait to see you tonight!

Charisse and Holly October 22, 2009 at 1:54 pm
