sputtered words

March 27, 2011

The computer actually coughed when I pushed the power button to wait for the screen to light up. cough cough whir sputter cough vroom! (success was slow in coming)

Either this old PC of ours wants to be a part of the Influenza ridden crew that is my family, or it had actually been that long since I last turned it on. Or both. It’s probably both.

Our little Asher sounds much the same. rev rev cough cough whir sputter cough

And now it seems it’s Daddy’s turn, but his is more like a COUGH COUGH wheeze COUGH COUGH. (I capitalize for BIGGER COUGH) (poor guy)

Me? I’m on day 4 (I think?) of uuugggggghhh and isolation in the bedroom, talking to myself and hoisting my pregnant belly from side to side. (not that I’d be complaining) (but I do actually have a sore on one elbow from all the hours of hoisting) (good grief)

Seriously, friends. Respiratory Influenza + pregnancy = BAD. So bad that I landed in the hospital, attached to a bag of IV fluids, something going down both nostrils to my throat to search for proof of Influenza (it was there!) (and OUCH!), covered in those warmed up blankets and sipping water through a straw. cough cough wheeze cough cough sputter cough

I told the doctor that I had the swine flu a year or two ago and that was way more fun than this. THIS? Is the kind of thing that leaves you shivering under layers of blankets, sweating, too weak to lift your head to eat or drink. It also comes complete with that kind of cough that would scare away even the most evil of bad guys. Oh, and then it steals your ability to stay in an upright position for more than thirty seconds without feeling faint, so you need assistance to say…go to the bathroom. (My poor husband.) Oh and yes, one last thing (I could go on and on but this is whining and I hate it when I whine)–no desire to eat! WHAT???

The funny thing is, gestating babies appreciate it when their mothers eat and drink things.

(I’m pretty sure I heard some uterine begging–Feed me! cough cough sputter ga ga cough FEED ME!)

Now let me tell you about the bright side:

First of all, I was sent home with medication that has the purpose of kicking the ass of the flu. (Or at least shortening the life of what is normally a week to ten day affair.) I think it might be working!

Nextly, my children are absolute troopers. They have been cooped up in this house for days and they continue to play Legos, pretend they’re in Star Wars, and generally entertain each other for hours on end.

Asher was put on the same ass-kicking medication at the first sign of the flu in him (high temp). He’s handling this sickness like a champ.

Miles is STILL healthy. So far, so GOOD.

Ryan is…well, there are no words for what Ryan has been. Besides strong and very busy and sacrificial and servant-like, all with his usual humor in tact. As he cleaned the house yesterday while I stayed sequestered in the bedroom, he said, to our unsuspecting children, “You know, cleaning can be very therapeutic guys…it’s like a spiritual enema.”

ahem.

Now, as he starts to sputter and cough, I’m finally starting to feel better. Perhaps he’ll hand off the Helper Baton to yours truly and then he’ll crash head-on into Influenza. I hope it’s not as bad for him, and I’ll be happy to bring him water and dry toast while layering myself in clorox wipes.

I hope this (very long) note finds each of you healthy.

Peace.

I’m glad you are on the road to health. Every illness is worse when pregnant, since your body is protecting the baby first, which is what we all want as mothers anyway. Hooray for strength from spouses too.

Pam @writewrds March 27, 2011 at 11:53 am

Hope you feel better ASAP!

I love the part about cleaning being a spirit enema (husbands can be handy : ) and I’m going to try it on the crew here (with an eye to developing a cleaning crew…).

Great blog!

Yuck! Sending healthy vibes your way and stay healthy vibes for Miles!

A “spiritual enema”, I have only had one when I was a small lad but spiritual wasn’t a word I would use to describe it. Maybe I was thinking to literal. An enema is a cleansing so maybe that is what he was referring to!??! Hoping you get better, we need your words of wisdom out here in the hinder lands.

Heather March 27, 2011 at 12:47 pm

Glenn,
yes, he’s (jokingly) speaking metaphorically. A spiritual cleansing. When you clean the house, it cleans your soul, basically. :)

Oh lady, I feel your pain. I had that when I was about 10 weeks pregnant with Libby. It hurt to breathe, I had to wear a mask, and was just MISERABLE!!!! Praying for the health of your family sweet friend.

omygoodness, Kim. I can’t imagine this in early pregnancy, when you felt all pukey on top of this. UGH, it’s awful. I guess we can just count ourselves lucky–we have so much guilt ammo to use on our children one day “WHEN I WAS PREGNANT WITH YOU…” :)

Kim March 27, 2011 at 7:20 pm

SO TRUE!!!! I can’t wait until Libby is old enough for me to guilt her about it ;) I have just started with Seth…”do you realize what you DID to me when you were being born?” Of course he thinks it is hilarious and tells me he just wanted to stay in the nice warm water a bit longer. Goofball.

Just to be certain, I wiped my fingers, hands and keys of my laptop in case any of your germies tried to penetrate themselves through the intrawebs and out through my computer.

Gah! I hope you and the entire family are as healthy has a horse in no time! :)

Heather March 27, 2011 at 6:31 pm

Very wise of you, Sherry. It’s that bad over here…I’m pretty sure this evil stuff COULD come through the computer and GET YOU.
Stay well! :)

Sara Bowyer March 27, 2011 at 5:50 pm

oh my word…I am so sorry!!! I did have to laugh at the spiritual enema!! I hope you all get well soon and that your hubby scrapes by without it!!!

Heather March 27, 2011 at 6:29 pm

No worries; laugh away! I did :) And thank you for the well wishes!

Ann's Rants March 27, 2011 at 5:59 pm

UGH. Dear friend, I cannot believe you are this ill AND pregnant. Glad the medicine is working and that you too seem to have your humor in tact.

I’m sorry – this post is jeopardizing my dearly-held belief that flu season is over. You don’t live near me, do you?

uuuum, I hope you’re really really really far away from central Minnesota. Apparently we’re having a GREAT time with the flu ’round these here parts. STAY AWAY. :)

hannah March 27, 2011 at 8:51 pm

so sorry you are sick, hope you’re better soon! xo

(LOVING your blog, i found it earlier today and have happily been catching up a bit!)

trish van pilsum March 27, 2011 at 10:54 pm

Did he really say “spiritual enema” to the boys? I can’t wait until they parrot that one to some unsuspecting teaching some day.
I hope you are feeling better and that Ryan doesn’t get knocked down to hard.
My boy has been sick off and on for days.

Heather March 28, 2011 at 8:15 am

Oh yes, of course he said it. :) The boys just stared at him. I waited to hear “what’s an enema?” but they just went back to playing. phew! I hope your boy gets and stays healthy too!

Frelle March 27, 2011 at 11:22 pm

I’m so sorry you’ve been ill. Pregnancy is hard enough without all of that. Moms just DO NOT have time to be sick. Glad your spouse is competent to handle the kids etc. when you’re down. I hope it doesn’t last long for him.

We’ve had a similar, butt-kicking ick around here. My hubs was sick all through our family mini-vacation last weekend and spent the whole thing in the hotel room bed (except for the time spent in the Instacare). I’m leaving for a once-in-a-lifetime vacation with my sisters on Tuesday and I’m terrified that I’ll FINALLY get the lung-ick on my vacation! Since we’re going to Washington DC that means a TON of walking- I need my lungs for that!

Here’s hoping we’re ALL better quick!

Oh boy, Cynthia. Yes, STAY WELL. You never know, sometimes it just skips people. Miles is still healthy over here and Ryan seems to have a version of it with NO temp and no knock-down cough. (I tell you these hopeful things so you can be sure to believe your lungs are going to stay hikable) :) Have so much fun on your trip!!

christy March 28, 2011 at 6:35 am

Oh Heather…you poor thing. I hope you ALL feel much better VERY soon!!! xo

“You know, cleaning can be very therapeutic guys…it’s like a spiritual enema.”

It is now 8am. I don’t think I’ve chuckled quite so heartily at 8am on a Monday morning. This sounds like something my hubby would say.

Heather, I hope your whole clan feels better, stat. Mamas can’t get sick! Hugs.

Oh, do I feel your pain.

We are on the tail end of this. Began for us last week Friday.

It was FATIGUING.

Hope you are all better soon, mama, and get that appetite back!

Heather March 28, 2011 at 8:17 am

Oh no…I hope you guys are completely well and STAY well! We need health and SPRING. Bring it :)

Tracie March 28, 2011 at 12:16 pm

Oh no. Zero fun!! I hope you are feeling better today and that the germs are exercised from your house quickly.

“spiritual enema”…that is hilarious!
