saturday’s train

April 2, 2011

This is a train of thought:

I’m a nomad. Or maybe the idea of being one just appeals to me sometimes. It’s like I’ve come with some sort of internal map inside me that needs traveling. So sometimes I just want an RV and my family and miles and miles of road. I want to stop and see friends and meet new people across the country and I want to teach my kids that there’s a great big world out there, you know?

We don’t have an RV though and that’s okay, of course. Maybe one day we will. Maybe we’ll be those crazy people that other people whisper about–they are so weird-they just drive around. That would be okay.

Today I get to travel a not-so-terribly-long distance to The Big City, where we lived over a year ago now. (I still miss living there, by the way.) I’ll get to see “old” friends, go to a blog event and a baby shower, that sort of thing.  I’m so glad to be going. I love my family but they’re going to stay home this time, to go to swimming lessons and play the Wii. Saturday is Wii Day–the only day of the week that the boys get to play the Wii. They are so deprived.

They may not have much screen time, but they are getting a sister. I can’t quite wrap my mind around that but yesterday the hospital called to confirm that they got the paperwork they need for admitting me come June. It felt weird to talk about it when it seems so far away, but it will be here in a hot second, won’t it?

She will be here. In just about two and half months!

This means we’re starting over with the baby stage and sometimes that terrifies me and sometimes I even feel kind of jealous of my friends who have moved past the physically demanding newborn/infancy/toddler stage, I’ll admit it. But at the same time, I think I’d feel bad for myself if it were over. We’re just not done yet, and that’s okay. We’re not losing out on anything, we’re simply gaining something different. A person, actually. A girl person. A yet to be named girl person.

Which reminds me, the number one name in that baby naming poll I did awhile back was Ruby, followed closely by Stella and Elsie. I had said that we loved some of the names on the poll, liked some of them alright and didn’t even really like a couple of them.  I was trying to throw you off, so you wouldn’t know what our very most favorites are. But wouldn’t you know it? You voted for our top three.

Cool.

This ends my train of thought. Maybe I should call it an “RV of thought” for this week. Nah…

P.S. I allow Miles and Asher to use the fancy Nikon to practice photography. Sometimes I’m kind of astounded at their shots.

Like this one taken by Ash Man. I don’t know, I just love it:

The End.

I love Ruby and Stella. I am a big fan of old fashioned names that aren’t “Old”, if that makes sense.

Have a super weekend!

P.S. It’s my retirement dream to shack up in an RV and drive anywhere and everywhere. See you in the trailer park!! :-)

Ah, Ruby. I voted for that one. Love the other 2 as well.

Traveling the country in a Winnebago? I don’t know. I tend to get really homesick after about a week but the thought of downsizing and having freedom is very tempting.

Asher’s photo, btw, would make for a terrific prompt.

Wow! That’s a beautiful photo!

Sometimes, I want to jump in an RV and tour the country, too. There’s so much out there and I want to experience so much of it. What an amazing adventure that would be.

I LOOOOVE the name Ruby. And Stella. And Elsie. Such great names.

Saturday is our Wii day too. Except for the days when I bribe Seth to go to school with 20 minutes of Wii time when he gets home.

I love your trains…I’ll jump on anytime.

And, you’re right, that little girl is going to be here SO FAST!

You have given me permission to have a train (or an RV) of thought. I tend to like to be organized. (Though I’m not in real life) and this post makes me see the loveliness of letting it ramble along life’s road, taking in the sights.

One word on losing and gaining. I know. With every stage (I’m right now getting ready to send eldest to college ( http://altaredspaces.com/altared-spaces/complimentary-colors-and-emancipation ) and I think about what I’m losing. But there is also this precious thing I’m gaining: a grown up relationship with this girl who really and truly is becoming a woman. And I know her really, really well. It’s totally cool.

I’m feeling a lot of these same things. We’re starting over again with a seven-year-old. I never thought I would be here… then again, I almost lost faith that we would ever be here again. We’ll both become moms again around the same time, albeit in very different ways. The mind boggles.

I’m so excited about “baby girl” ;) and can’t wait to hear the chosen name. You know – when you choose it and reveal it.

I love the picture that Asher took! I have yet to be brave enough to hand the fancy Nikon over to the crazy boys. I have handed over the not-so-fancy point and shoot canon to Jay and he has taken some pretty remarkable shots though. Fun stuff!

That RV thought – it’s been with me and my husband for years. We keep talking about how when the kids are grown, we’re going to sell everything and just live in an RV traveling around. We’ve driven cross-country three times and the freedom of the open road is very appealing.

great photo! and as always, great musings on life :) I wonder if we’re “done”. No more newborns? really? maybe? hard to imagine, but all those big choices in life are hard, no?
