perfect timing

September 6, 2011

Like good ol’ Hootie and the Blowfish like to say/sing, Tiiiiime, why you punish me?

Tomorrow Elsie will be three months old, Asher will have his early childhood screening for kindergarten and Miles starts school on Thursday.

When I started this blog, Miles and Asher were a toddler and a baby (WHAT?) and Elsie was what they call a glimmer.

Miles and I were alone today, visiting with his teacher and then out for lunch. He asked me how he can go to school if he doesn’t spell yet. I explained that he’ll learn and it’s okay not to know things ahead of time. That toddler boy is still in there, wide-eyed and wondering how everything works. He will always be there.

Yesterday Ryan took the boys to the State Fair while Elsie and I stayed home. The boys were so tired when they got home, I’m pretty sure they fell asleep with only one “it’s time to be quiet now” from me. Today Asher was still so tired and so he put himself in his bed after lunch. That baby boy is still in there and always will be.

Right now Elsie is sitting in her rock and play chair and Miles has decorated her with socks. She has them on her hands and doesn’t seem to mind the frustration of not being able to gnaw at her fingers fuzz-free. Miles is laughing hysterically.

I’m boiling water for rice noodles and writing this and noticing that Asher needs new glasses and remembering that nothing at all is ever entirely ordinary. And maybe that’s why it all goes so fast even while sometimes it just doesn’t.

I wonder. Does the fast and slow of life with children mix itself up to make perfect timing? I think it could be true.

P.S. Today’s post at Mama Manifesto includes my favorite baby gear. Head on over if you’d like.

Elsie, The Acorn…adorned in acorns…

Check out that furrowed brow and those CHEEKS. This is the look she gets when she’s about to poop. Just so you know.

{A big thank you to Barley and Birch for sending Elsie this sweet acorn onesie gift with no request that I post about it. I truly triple-love their organic clothing and couldn’t be more tickled to have an acorn onesie for my acorn girl. Thank you, B & B!}

Oh I love this. these kids grow so fast…entirely too fast.

That Elsie. She is so amazing. I want to chomp on her. How is she feeling?

Love Barley and Birch. What a sweet gift for your little Acorn.

Hi you!
Elsie is doing MUCH better. It seems that switching to a stronger reflux med really really helped a lot. And I think maybe just the slow maturing of her very gassy belly…which is still very gassy…but she’s getting air out more often. Loudly. :)

I miss you. xoxoxo

What a sweet acorn picture! ;)

Ahhh, the state fair. Would you believe that my husband and I went TWICE. At 7.5 months pregnant, I mostly sat on a bench while he fetched my favorite treats. I head heartburn for days but it was worth it. We didn’t bring the kids either time. We’re total pigs and really just go for the food.

Happy first week of school for those in your house old enough to go! My oldest is in first grade and the girls are in pre-school. woo-hoo!

Oh you and your words. Yes, our babies will always be in there wondering and learning and even *gasp* sleeping.

Happy first week- we’re feeling change right now, too!

I was just looking at my oldest today, who is suddenly old enough to wear deodorant and care about whether or not his mother is wearing pajamas when she drops him off at school and yet, he was just so little and loved my pajamas, and now… we wear the same size shoes. I’m not sure when it all happened.

And now i’m pregnant again… with number six and I feel so very overwhelmed at the prospect of doing it all one more time, but then today I saw the heartbeat fluttering so little and tiny and perfect on the ultrasound screen and I knew that I could it again… that I needed to do it again. (But only this last time.)

And those are the mothering thoughts that your mothering thoughts inspired in me.

Ha! That was my second thought when I saw that picture (after, “Oh, how adorable.”)–I thought, that girl is cooking up something!
