Just Write

September 10, 2011

Do you want to write with me? I would love it if you would.

{Edited to let you know: The current Just Write, complete with a linky for you, can be found HERE. Read on to learn how it works}

I had this idea because I love both reading and writing things that are freely written in the moment, things that are descriptive of experience. Whether that be in the actual moment or within a day or two of living something, I don’t care. I just think the details need to be fresh for the writer and then typed without over-thinking in an effort to clarify.

What ends up revealing itself when free-writing is that everything has meaning.

That is a magnificent gift of writing. If we write from a free heart-gut place, our souls start speaking.

So here’s my idea! Every Tuesday, here at The EO, we can link up our freely written posts. I’ve included some examples below, but the only direction I’m going to give is that you JUST WRITE.

Write what again, Heather? I don’t think I really get it…

Write whatever is happening around you WHILE you are writing (sometimes that’s the very best) OR whatever DETAILS you remember about your day or a specific recent-ish experience.

Next, try not to clarify or explain what you want to speak through your post too much. (Try not to force a theme or message.) Just write your experiences. What did you: See? Smell? Touch? Feel? Hear? What did it make you think?

Then watch how your ordinary and extraordinary experiences speak all on their own. That’s it!

Here are some examples:

Layers

Turning

In a Safe Place

Someone who is good at this is Steph from Adventures in Babywearing. An example is her post I Love the 70′s.  Another example is Contents May Shift In Transit. Steph is gifted in that she says SO much without directly saying it.  She…just writes!

Another gifted writer friend of mine is Vikki Reich from Up Popped A Fox. Don’t miss her post, When I’m Old for another example of some really good free-writing.

:::

So please come and link up to Just Write every Tuesday here at The Extraordinary Ordinary–tell your stories! It’s best to do this whenever you’re struck with inspiration, so write at any time and just save your post for Tuesday.

If you’re not a blogger, please still join us! Grab a notebook or a new doc on your computer and Just Write! (If you ever want to share what you’ve written with me, I’d love that! – heatheroftheeo @ gmail dot com)

Questions? I will gladly answer. Just leave a comment or send me an email.

I love this idea. And I’ll definitely join you. One of the problems I have with being a consistent writer is confidence. Lack of confidence in what I’m saying. Or overthinking what I want to say. In reality, the posts that just come to me as I write them (often unplanned, mostly unplanned) are the ones that are the best and say the most. So thank you. I look forward to sharing with you some unplanned writing experiences. : )

I totally relate to what you are saying! I struggle with the confidence about what I am writing, and usually the posts I feel the most vulnerable about are the ones people identify with and comment about the most.

Great post, glad Steph emailed me with it. I’ve been (finally) writing on my blog regularly for several months and it has been awesome to have people read it and to write back or say something when I am out about town. I think few people realize how the simple things well written (as you said!) can move others. I didn’t write because I did not think what I have to say is so fascinating, and it isn’t, but some folks can relate and THAT is what it is all about. Thanks for the encouragement!

Love. I will be here with bells on (what does that mean, exactly?) come Tuesday.

Does it count if we plunk ourselves down somewhere interesting Tuesday instead of, say, in our own kitchen where milk splatters are drying on the counter and the toddler is standing on the table drawing on himself with his sister’s markers? In which case, writing becomes something of an afterthought….

No, that’s not allowed.
Kidding.

But hey, feel free to stand with your laptop at the kitchen counter and type out all that crazy around you. You can wipe the milk splatters off the screen when you’re done :)

I’m excited about this because it’s going to be tough for me! And yet, the posts of mine that people seem to like the best are the ones that just flowed out of my fingers and onto the screen because they were just what was floating around in my brain at the time. I’ll see if I get an inspiration before Tuesday so I can link up!

Hi, Heather:

I have been clicking the links with the hashtag #justwrite and am blown away by what I”ve been reading.

The first time I went over to a site, I thought, “just luck” to find such an amazing post.

Then I clicked on the second one tweeted out: HOLY COW, that one was good, too.

By the time I clicked the third one tweeted out I thought something is fishy here: every post is so incredibly good.

Could it be that that is JUST the result of #justwrite? Or is every one that links up already an accomplished writer?

I don’t know.

But I do love reading them: they are all such brain candy.

Heather May 10, 2012 at 2:32 pm

Hi Monica,

I’m definitely not an expert, but what works for me is to try not to over-think my writing. To just sit down and start with what I have on my mind or heart without worrying too much about editing, etc. To let it be messy or not make any sense and then go back later to read it over and fix it up a bit. Discouragement usually comes when we think too hard about what to say, I think. We feel the most inspired with words when we write from a place of honesty and feeling–a “letting go” of sorts.

I hope this helps just a bit. There’s a lot of really good books out there on the art of writing as well. They’d be much more helpful than I can be :)
