Just Write ~ The Third

September 27, 2011

I am all chills and aches and so are they, the whole family. There is much whining, mostly from me. I have Mastitis on top of the bug or whatever we have and isn’t it funny that the first time Elsie slept through the night was my second night of Mastitis? So I didn’t even get to enjoy it because I was too uncomfortable and couldn’t sleep.

See? Whining.

Ryan had to take me to the doctor for antibiotics because everything just hurts and I didn’t want to drive and we were driving along and then went to Target to get Needed Things and there was a mom standing in front of the gas drops for infants and I walked right up to her and asked about her baby and then we talked about things that help those very fussy gassy babies.

(That was all one huge run-on sentence and I’m not even going to fix it.)

It felt good to pay it forward with this fellow mom. I saw hope in her eyes after we talked and neither of us had make-up on. I had the chills and my shoulders were hunched, I’m sure. She didn’t care. Neither of us cared about any of that. We just want relief for our babies.

The Target people were taking out Christmas things to sell. I can’t believe that. Let’s just have Halloween first, shall we?

Elsie fell asleep slowly while we walked the aisles, her lids going heavy under her green knit hat with a heart on it. Then the cart bumped over those big silver things on the ground that are in the doorway and she woke up but that’s okay because she slept through the night last night. I hope it happens again soon when we’re all better.

It will. Sometime.

Oh, hope you’re so much better soon. I haven’t been sleeping either, but at least I am feeling pretty okay. I just woke up from a dream that you had posted a video for your Just Write this week (ha) and it was so good to hear your voice.

She slept through the night….you just snuck that in there, but it is something to CELEBRATE!! If she can do it once, that means she’ll be doing it again soon and often. Yay!!

This post just feels so real, and I love that.

Boo to the sick. And good for you for speaking to that mom. So often I want to offer my experience or sympathy, but something holds me back. Maybe I’ll get past that next time. Keep sleeping well Elsie!!

Yeah! She slept through the night! I love that you were still able to share and bond with the other mom in Target despite how miserable you felt. You’re a beautiful person. Feel better!

Maverick. You. Are. An. AMAZING. Writer. I loved reading this raw, messy, real linking of words and life and emotion. Beautiful. (PS: mastitis sucks raw eggs. Sending healing thoughts your way.) xoxo, Goose

I needed that. I was feeling all annoyed at my post. It IS whiny and I read it this morning and was all “sheesh, shut up, lady” to myself. So yeah, I’m glad you felt it spoke more than BLECH. :) Thank you!

Melissa Goerke September 27, 2011 at 8:40 am

Oh gosh. I hope the antibiotics start doing their job so you can enjoy the sleeping through the night…well, actually I hope the sleeping through the night happens first so you can maybe get enough rest to let the drugs work!

You mom encounter was so sweet. You both probably needed each other at that moment!

Elaine September 27, 2011 at 9:18 am

I’m so glad you went up to that mother and talked to her. What an awesome thing to do. I wish we lived near each other so I could come hug you and hold Elsie while you rest. I had a bout of Mastitis with Gavin. It’s THE worst. But those antibiotics work pretty fast, thank GOD. Hugs Mama.

And I HATE those silver thingys that you have to bump over at the doors at Target. Doesn’t keep me from shopping there though (a lot).

Mastitis AND a bug??? You go right ahead and whine…I sure would! xoxo

Elizabeth @claritychaos September 27, 2011 at 10:00 am

OH, I really hope you’re feeling better soon. And you know, that moment with that mom in Target will be something she remembers and will pay forward herself. Those moments are huge, and we all need at least one opportunity on both ends of it. Rest up, Mama.

oh mastitis – I remember it well – they felt like big huge hanging hot jugs of pain. no way to move your arms, sit, or lay and worst of all….have someone (usually little) want to hug you! You’re totally allowed to whine! Ask anyone!

molly September 27, 2011 at 1:02 pm

Awww, it will happen I’m sure. Hope you feel better soon, mama!

Honestly? You don’t seem whiny to me. You seem raw-this-is-what’s-going-on. There is NOTHING wrong with that. Including the no make up part- I love that!

Oh, I feel for you. That sounds miserable.

I complained in my Just Write post too, but for much less valid a reason.

Bless your cotton-pickin’ heart. I sure do hope you feel better, soon. Breastfeeding is for the champs; I swear. I linked up before I read this post, and I think (considering your C-mas comment and all) it’s funny I wrote about our visiting Santa, today. Because we visit him year-round. Feel better. Really.

Laura September 27, 2011 at 7:48 pm

First, I’m so sorry you have mastitis! I’ve had it several times over the course of nursing five babies, but only once to the point of fever & chills like you–right when we were moving to a new state with a two week old, and an almost-two-year old, four & six year olds, with school starting (in a whole new place) three weeks later. Good times. Sorry to whine right back at you, but it was one of the hardest times of my life–my only run-in with postpartum depression, and just general challenges of raising a big family during a move. Anyway, sorry for the tangent, but I feel your pain, & I recommend lots of motrin (my midwife prescribed 800mg every six hours–YES, you read that right!! until the bad symptoms subsided).
Second, I was at Kohl’s today & they were putting out Christmas stuff, too. WTF??? This is a nutty world we live in. It would be one thing if we were really thinking about and planning for the REAL meaning of Christmas, finding joy in our hearts and so on, but this is such reatail b.s. that it makes me sick!
Okay. Feel better soon. Maybe one of these weeks, despite my lack of a blog, I’ll try your Write On campaign!
Love.

Cynthia September 27, 2011 at 10:22 pm

I am so sorry about the mastitits. I haven’t had it for more than 10 years and my boobs hurt just hearing the words. Did you know that, historically speaking, mastitis killed more new Moms than childbirth? Given how you’re feeling, I suppose you wouldn’t be surprised! Thank goodness it can be cleared up now reasonably quick with anti-biotics. Sorry everyone is ill- especially you because Moms just don’t have time to be sick. Whine all you want here, we’ll feel sorry for you. Moms never have anyone in the house feeling sorry for them when they are sick!

Oh no! Being sick is the WORST. I hope you feel better really really soon!

Jessica@Team Rasler September 28, 2011 at 8:27 am

I love you for walking up to that mom and talking to her. I can’t tell you how many times I wished for someone to do that as I stood in the aisle trying to figure out what to get to help my little guys when they didn’t feel well. I hope the mastitis passes quickly because it completely sucks.

Oh, so sorry! I had mastitis twice and GAH. Awful, awful. I loved how you redeemed it all though, made it a moment of beauty and “you, too? me, too!” for another soul. Lovely. (I love how you write.)
