#outmywindow-a more private photo sharing app

July 19, 2012

{This is sponsored content by outmywindow and BlogHer.}

This is a story about how I left Elsie for the first time and was Phoebe instead of Heather, for a moment.

If one can randomly fly to California that’s exactly what I did. I wrote snippits of the journey for Just Write this week and I don’t really know why but it’s one of my favorite posts ever. Maybe because snippets of life is where it’s at, you know? It was a whirlwind trip, just an arrival in the afternoon, an overnight, a full day at Warner Brothers studios and back home again that same day. Or night, really, since I pulled in the driveway at about 3a.m.

This was my first time away from Elsie and even though it was super short, I missed her and her brothers super much. But I had a great time and it was so good for both of us, to have a little separation, to prepare for BlogHer ’12 in three short weeks! And you guys, guess what I did? I saw the set of Friends and not only that, I actually whisper-sang Smelly Cat while standing behind the actual microphone that Phoebe stood behind and I held her guitar.

True story.

I would show you proof of me being Phoebe but a) I was whisper-singing Smelly Cat so I wasn’t taking pictures and b) we weren’t supposed to actually go into the set. We were supposed to stay off to the side, but our trusting tour guide who shall remain nameless (but was really really good at his or her job) allowed us to take just a tiny careful moment inside Central Perk to bring us back to 1997-ish.

(If you don’t remember Phoebe singing on Friends, I’m really sorry about that because a) it was funny and b) you’ve been wondering what I’m talking about for about 4 paragraphs now.)

I’m still kind of in awe of how much our tour guide knew about all the shows and movies that we were learning about while seeing where things have been filmed. I hung out with Wendi Aarons and Nichole Beaudry a lot during the tour and got to see a lot of other old and new friends. We were there to learn more about a new photo sharing app called outmywindow. We met the people who have been working hard to develop it and they were so kind to receive feedback and questions blogger rapid-fire like. (I swear, we talk like we type and that’s fast.) If you remember anything about me mentioning outmywindow to you, let it be this: this new app gives you a way to share your photos instantly while allowing you to share these photos with only those you choose.

For instance, there are times when I know my mom would love a picture I took with my phone but I don’t neccessarily want to share said picture with everyone. My mom doesn’t really know how to text so sending her photos that way is pointless. With other apps, the picture is available publicly through the app website, and usually the options are limited to sharing on Twitter and Facebook as well. With outmywindow, you can create groups and then choose to send your photos to whatever small or large group you’d like. Then when someone goes to the outmywindow site, they’re able to get to the pictures you’ve chosen to share with them.

In this age of increasing non-privacy, this is truly a gift, especially for the many parents who are trying to keep their kids’ faces off the Internet for as long as possible (which is obviously not me, but I totally respect it.)

outmywindow is launching this very day, TODAY! You can find it on iTunes today, featured as breaking news in their “what’s new” section. If you’d like more control over your instant photos, it’s something to check out, friends.

In closing, I must tell you that I was gone for one night and that was the beginning of Elsie sleeping through the night! I would think this is related to middle-of-the-night nursing not being available and a long hard fight for Ryan, but no, she just simply never woke up until the morning and has done the same each night since. Even though this is so good and overall she did really well, I’m still nervous about being gone for four days in three weeks. I know it’ll be okay while I also know that I’ll be sad while I’m also having a great time doing The Serenity Suite at BlogHer and seeing so many faces I love to see. And Ryan can always send me photos of these short people of ours through outmywindow and it’ll feel like it’s just our thing, only ours. That feels right.

sometimes people write things about a company or a sponsored thing … and it sounds all fakey. and not right.
this? sounds oh.so.right.

Yay! Loving the Phoebe/Smelly Cat thing!
She’s my firstborn’s namesake. I thought she was such a great character. So far, our Phoebe hasn’t let us down in terms of kookiness, or bad singing, either!

Smelly cat=awesome…although Ross’s “style” would have been very much appreciated, too. LOL Would have needed a keyboard for that.

*sigh* Friends…

Glad you had a great time, and you’re right, some time away is often very good for you AND the kiddos!

Not only do I love Smelly Cat, I love that you decided to be Phoebe and get behind the mike to sing it (or whisper sing it). :)

outmywindow sounds like a great app!

You write these sponsored posts so well! I’m always double guessing myself and triple checking and making sure I added in a line about this and a line about that.
AUGH!
But alas, there you have it!
