Just Write {73}

February 18, 2013

He’s humming a Christmas song and sometimes breaking out, off tune, with the words to the song instead of that low hum. I have no idea how a Christmas song came to mind, other than the fact that it’s winter in Minnesota.

He’s banging around the kitchen; I hear the pots and pans and cabinet doors slamming. He called out and asked if I wanted eggs. Yes, of course. Our chickens make the best eggs.

We got home late yesterday afternoon from Austin, Texas.

We saw friends and drove around to many neighborhoods. We spent time downtown and on S Congress where we had great Mexican food and strolled through boutiques and shops. We got the kids some Zots at the big candy store. Do you remember Zots? Hard candy that starts fizzing from its insides when you bite it.

The boys hopped around squealing and saying how sour it was when we gave it to them last night. They think it’s the best mommy-and-daddy-have-been away-from-home gift ever.

Elsie missed us so much, she clung to me like a little monkey and kept trying to pull herself up and in, higher and closer, her knees bent and her little heels digging hard into my sides. Like I was the safest place and she was the mountain climber finding shelter from wind. To try to put her down was just plain silly. I didn’t want to anyway.

The eggs are gone, eaten quickly by both of us, signaling the day to really begin. We’re going to try to put our house on the market March 1st and then move, but we don’t know where. Today we’re here, back home where we belong, with these squealing and clinging people we missed so much in just a couple of short days away. They are home. So are we.

This is the 73rd installment of Just Write, an exercise in free writing your ordinary and extraordinary moments. {Please see the details here.} I would love to read your freely written words so join me and link up below. You can add the url of your post at any time. Just be sure it’s a link to your Just Write post, not to your main page, and please don’t link to posts that are not freely written in the spirit of capturing moments–you know, don’t link to how-to lists or sponsored posts. I want people to remember that this is about writing and not about traffic. Also, please link back to this post in your post so people know where to go if they’d like to join in.

Please take a moment to visit someone else who has linked up! It’s a really good way to meet new writers and get inspired by the meaning behind their moments. Word? Thank you!

oh, it is so good to be missed but all the better to have the knees in our collar bones and heels in our sides as our babes try to crawl back into our hearts, as if they ever left while we were gone. I love this, and I so look forward to where you’ll move…

Hi Heather! It’s my first time to link up with you – thank you for the opportunity! I read your link-up rules and though, I haven’t written poetic/free prose style in a long while, I like the idea and I wanted to try my mind at it again :). But still, I needed to add one or two paragraphs at the end in my usual style so as not to make my readers wonder :D. I hope it passes!

I’ve moved eight times in 23 years of marriage. I love the adventure and hope that a clean slate brings with the new. And its good to move when you have littles, it gets harder to do that when kids are older. Look forward to hearing the rest of your story as it unfolds.

You’re moving! I feel like I’ve missed something! What a great adventure that I cannot wait to read more about. Where are you moving to?

Hi Marta!

We’re not exactly sure. We’ve been planning to move to Minneapolis/St Paul after putting the house on the market, but now my husband’s job may change. Then we’d move to Austin, Texas! So we’re just kind of waiting to see what happens with the sale of our home and with all the details about this possible job change. It’s exciting! and also scary :)

Austin! Such a great city. And in my home state. I hope you have peace, wherever you end up. And you make re-entry sound so lovely.

I’ve never been to Austin but I’ve heard it’s nice. It is so hard to decide where to raise a family and where you will call home. I would have lived anywhere when I was single, but now that I have a son the decision seems so much bigger.

I hope you had a great trip to Austin. Itis a great place to live! We love it here.

Sarah! If we move there, we’ll have to get together!

This is my first time linking up as well, but your post made me envious for fresh eggs and a brood of chickens. Having chickens is up there on our domestic list of things to do. And those clinging and squealing people make coming home the best. Mine don’t cling quite as much anymore and I miss it.

Best of luck as you sell your home and contemplate the future!
