Just Write {82}

April 22, 2013

I always ask for spinach and black olives and pickles and lettuce and spicy mustard. If I get the spinach, I’ll feel healthy. Doesn’t it make everythign healthy? Jared, the sub sandwich guy who lost all that weight, would be proud.

On the way to the airport, alone, I sat again with Ira Glass and This American Life. The two hour trip goes by quickly with Ira in the passenger seat. So to speak.

Spinach leaf stems keep popping out the side of my mouth with the bites and I suddenly am fully aware that there’s someone at the table next to mine and he feels too close. Too close for eating comfort. We are basically eating together but so separate, waiting for planes.

This trip was planned starting yesterday morning, and here I am, alone in an airport but not alone because of the strangers. But still alone.

This isn’t the easy thing to do. The easy option is to stay in what we know, but it’s become really obvious that moving to Austin is what we’re doing. All signs point….

we have roots in Minnesota and they’re deep and long and wide and there are so many years of knowing the spaces and places and people. I can feel this shift in me–like something is tearing even while we’re excited and happy to be making this change.

I’ll be house hunting; a whirlwind trip which leaves just tomorrow to see loads of houses. Wish me luck and say a prayer and cross your fingers and toes…

It seems like most of the time, the hard thing is the right thing. In given the right to choose, I have so often run from the hard thing and it feels good to not run. We’re turning toward the hard thing and doing it. We’re moving to Austin, Texas.

I say that and I feel a little bit like I’m looking around , not for strangers at tables too close, but for our extended Minnesotan families, to see if I’m caught. Because the hardest part is going far away from them and it still matters so much what they think and how they feel.

And now, as I finish freely writing this, I’m sitting in a hotel room alone the sun is coming through the window. This is surreal and good and hard.

You are so busted! I am sad! But your adventure awaits…and so go with my blessing! And a warm and hip place for me to escape to when winter lasts through April?

Oh Kell, I know. Here I am, announcing a last-minute decision on my blog instead of, you know, sending an email or calling or texting or something like that. I’m such a jerk.

Can you please move to Austin, Texas?

MN will miss you!!! But I get it… And therefore I’m super excited for you guys!!!

I so understand this; the tear between roots and possibilities. And the house hunting; both exciting and daunting. Wishing you the best of luck!

Moving is so hard! The older I get the more attached I get to walls and streets (not to mention people and memories).

But moving is also exciting and I’m wishing you all the best!

I know I know oh how I know this is such a wild time. Go with it, as you are, and it will take you where you need to be. I can’t wait to see what’s next!

Austin Texas! That will be quite the adventure, but it will be a great adventure. I said this before, but we definitely need to trade moving across state line tips when the time comes. I have no idea the logistics of moving my entire house and will need to commiserate!

I’m in this same spot except our destination is MN. It is a hard spot to be in. It totally feels and sounds like tearing. Even with the excitement.

And here I was hoping we’d still get a chance to meet and for our kids to meet. Best wishes on your move, cousin.

It can be nearly impossible to leave the roots behind for something more and we struggle with that, but I am glad to see someone doing so and diving in. How will you all handle the warm weather after living in Minnesota? I can’t help but feel I would want to lay out on a warm stone to thaw, here’s hoping you all are able to do just that.

We can’t wait to welcome your sweet family with open arms and BBQ to Austin. I can’t wait to have you living 15 minutes from me. I can’t wait to show you all the great things this town has to offer. Oh, and to take all of our hooligans swimming, to the park and of course, the candy shop!
Love you!!!!

I hope the house hunting is going well ~ I can’t make the decision to move across town, much less across the country – but you? I know you’ll do fine -because you’ve proved it time and time again.
good luck.

Good luck on the next leg of your journey!

Lately, I’ve been thinking about relocating too. I’d love a new experience and to fill my life with new people.
