Just Write {86}

May 20, 2013

It’s not that long of a trip, just a little over a half an hour. All three of them are so tired and the complaints and needs start right away. I’m thirsty, I have to go to the bathroom, Asher interrupted me!

I’m turned a little sideways in the front passenger seat and talking over Elsie to the boys in the back. They want to know why their older cousin pinches his nose closed when he sneezes. They keep acting it out for me, to be sure I know what they mean. We start to laugh a lot and I glance at Elsie to see her head bobbing and her eye lids dropping. She tries hard to stay a part of the short road trip levity, but sleep wins and her head is bowed too far forward. I take a change of clothes from the diaper bag and try to squeeze them between the side of the seat and her head. She wakes up for a second to scowl and fuss and then her eye lids are too heavy again.

The boys are now talking about their schedules at school. Miles is saying things like “then lunch, then recess, then math, then Spanish…”

and when it’s Asher’s turn he says, Play. Circle rug. Table. Book….No….Look at the teacher….Book….Jackets….No wait….Listen to the book. Jackets. Home.

We are laughing from the front seat and then have to explain that we’re not laughing AT him….he’s just so cute and it makes us so happy. He’s okay with this answer. It doesn’t matter really anyway because this is the best day of his life. He lost his first tooth and it is so tiny and when they all came in at once when he was five months old it was so horrible. He wasn’t going to be five going on six and waiting for the tooth fairy this fast.

Elsie was still asleep when we got home and the boys jumped out past her and I waited outside, watching her.

Lovely memory. I love those moments when I can’t help but laugh at the things my girl says. And oh I am not ready for those loose tooth stages!

I love memories like that. The silly things they say that they don’t even realize are just so silly.

Cute. &, we frequently have to explain to our six year old how we’re not laughing *at* her. There is a difference when we laugh from the heart towards someone..

Some of my favorite moments are those silly vignettes on the way from here to there. I need to write some of them down.

My moments like this were walking moments…we lived in Paris when my two were in preschool and elementary school. And most of these extraordinary/ordinary comments happened in french. You capture the feel of those special moments in this exchange in such a great way – transported me right back there!

This is very sweet, and beautifully written. We spend so much time in the car, it’s become one of my favorite places to talk and catch up with the kids or just laugh with them.
