Just Write {105}

October 7, 2013

We had taken quite a detour to get there, initially going to the wrong hotel and then taking Atlanta’s train system to the right place. We laughed the whole time, even when it felt like we were entering the center of the earth via the longest and slowest down down down escalator I’ve ever seen. There was no one else around, which made the dark and the damp and smelly air even more eerie. We found the terminal, down in there and came across a few good men, who noticed our possibly entirely lost looks and helped us figure out what train to take.

VikkiEscalator

A couple of days later, when we went to dinner again, a few people at a table turned to look at us as we stood at the hostess stand. They turned back to the large group with them, said something, and everyone turned to look at once. Staring. Staring at us. Why? It took me a few seconds to put it together and then I turned to say something about it to Vikki.

It’s probably me, she said. Yeah, it’s me. There was something like resolve in her face, a moment of choosing to let go. They probably think you’re my girlfriend, she said. I shrugged, shook my head and started following the host to our table. We sat down and started looking at our phones. It wasn’t rude, it was just some down time. We had been talking for a couple of days straight and it’s good to be comfortable enough with someone that you don’t have to keep talking even when you’re tired. Earlier, we had gone for a walk, out in the sun, getting some air and we stopped and sat on a bench and talked about the parts of ourselves that are really hard to see, or share. Just when you think you’ve talked about everything, you never can.

The sun was so warm on my arms and face, but there was the most perfect breeze. Me too, we said, a few times. Me too.

I loved seeing you in Atlanta and also meeting Vikki. She and you are beautiful women, and THAT is why they were staring. That’s why I do. :-)

I love you and I love when you write like this, when you just take us along a slow, wonderful ride with your thoughts.

I will echo Kristin, the reason people look at you is to see the radiance of you (and Vikki’s too ).

two amazing women.

The comfortable silence is a testament to true friendship, true comfort (does not apply to attitudinal 12-year-olds though NO, THEY’RE JUST QUIET BECAUSE THE WORLD IS WRONG). Sorry. Flashback.

Also, I’d be damned proud to be Vikki’s girlfriend.
