Just Write {120}

January 27, 2014

Asher is blasting through age six, already more than halfway to seven. Seven. All these years, I’ve written about our happy boy and had the community of online mothers and other friends hold us up during the hardest times. He is doing so well and sometimes I catch myself holding my breath because of that. Like we’re playing Russian roullette, just waiting for one of these days to be the bullet. Hydrocephalus is like that. The odds are greater that something could go wrong, the longer it doesn’t.

The other day I followed behind him, pushing Elsie in her stroller and trying to keep up. He got a scooter for Christmas, and he tells me he worked very hard at being able to ride it. It’s tricky, to balance, just two wheels.

His brother has one too and he speeds on way ahead and we call after him, wait for us! Asher doesn’t give up, his little foot pushing along the ground, the scooter a little wobbly all the time. Then that day, he fell. He just abruptly lost control in front of us and I swear that boy bounced from the sidewalk to the grass. And within a second he was saying, I’m okay! I’m okay! and he was getting back up, brushing off dry brown grass and putting one foot back on the scooter, pushing off and going on. I came up behind him and asked if he was hurt.

No, he said. That was awesome! That was so awesome! I have to catch up to Brother and tell him.

This is how he lives.

This is the 120th installment of Just Write, an exercise in free writing your ordinary and extraordinary moments. {Please see the details here.} I would love to read your freely written words so join me and link up below. You can add the URL of your post at any time. Just be sure it’s a link to your Just Write post, not to your main page, and please don’t link to posts that are not freely written in the spirit of capturing moments–you know, don’t link to how-to posts, lists or sponsored posts. Also, please link back to this post in yours so people know where to go if they’d like to join in.

Please take a moment to visit someone else who has linked up! It’s a really good way to meet new writers and get inspired by the meaning behind their moments. Word? Thank you!

And I can hear him saying that. He is such a gem, that boy.

So precious, Heather. I love this moment and the snapshot of him, so clear and alive and spunky. I can’t imagine, almost seven years of being on this journey for you all, how much you’ve learned, the hard and the beautiful, and how Asher has taught you to live more fully in the present. I see that here, in your words. Thank you.

Heather, lovely. And now that I (think) I “get” the just write concept soooo much better (thanks to a particular course), I appreciate your post even more. Love its simplicity and that ache and fear in a mom’s heart that you captured within it.

Heather:
I’ve been following you for, gosh, is it 5 years now? I’ve thought about entering Just Write a million times, but I tend to be too careful, less stream of consciousness, more planned in my writing (I guess it comes from years of journalism and marketing writing). Even my own blog is full of structured little essays. But I did it. I did it! and it was quite freeing, especially since I am writing my first book and there are days when I really need to tap into that freedom. Thank you for providing a forum for creativity!!!
