I hear the click and feel the whoosh and I’m ready to (step-step) walk through that door

July 23, 2010

Hi, my name is Heather and I’m here because I have a story to tell. Actually, pretty much everything I’m experiencing as of late is coming alive with what my friend Ann calls a fireworks display of story-telling. I feel like a bit of a spectator to myself, while I watch doors opening like I never even once dreamed they would.

Click, the locks are turned and the creak of the swinging door blasts through my ears while I wait for the BANG! It’s exhilarating and shocking and terrifying. I sit dumbfounded at the chance to share my entire story, all that my heart-gut leads me to tell, through a book.

I will meet with an agent in New York City while I am there for the BlogHer conference. I will sign my name. And then I will surrender to the chaos of life as I juggle writing, motherhood, being a wife, blogging and speaking engagements, and oh yes, sobriety.

(You should see it, the way I run circles, it’s highly entertaining.)

I am in the blogging world to tell my story, of addiction, motherhood, surrender and truth. This crazy and mixed up online world has always been my place for transparency. I want to connect and inspire, and I remind my readers of that quite often. Thankfully, so far, many of you are along for the ride and support me with such grace, it’s astounding, really. And because of you, a completely talented and passionate agent discovered this space. Please know, I think it’s because of you, receiving my words the way that you do and inspiring me to continue to pour out my heart and soul in this space.

My story is unfolding rapidly, as we speak. I am on a roller coaster ride like never before, toward publishing a book. This is what makes my story unique-this rapid pace and me, who I am. There is only one Heather with only one voice. She is the only one who can describe addiction and motherhood in her particular way. The only one who can answer the emails and watch lives change because of the telling of her truths. She is open, like a lake, to the enormous potential of this calling. She is free, finally, to fill in the gaps and stand in-between and bellow out words that miraculously cause change. Every day, more emails of change. Not because of her, but through her.

Yes, there she is, doing that. Not on her own but through a divine calling she never expected.

She is me, and I’m here to tell my story.

(and she never likes to toot her own horn, but she’s trying hard to believe, to really believe. So thank you for putting up with her.)

{This post is my submission to be considered in an endeavor called Project Mom Casting. I am entering this post to be considered for casting in a television reality series, oh yes I am. Have I lost my mind? I think not. I’m simply willing and able to take this ride if given the chance, to tell my story. I would love to be a part of the first reality TV show focused on mom bloggers with stories to tell (and we all have one). If you’d like to be considered, check out the Project Mom Casting facebook page for details.}

Friends. Oh, friends. This comment section? Right down there? It embodies grace like so many things, and yet stands all on its own with your support. It is why, YOU are why, I’m invested in this online community.

Wow. What a fantastic gift that God has given you. You're going to bless so many people through the pages of that book.

Suzi July 23, 2010 at 12:24 pm

I was SO HOPING this was what your big news was. Seriously, since I read your blog the first time I thought you should write a book. I am so very happy for you! :) Congrats!!!!

Adventures In Babywearing July 23, 2010 at 12:24 pm

Incredible, Heather! You amaze me- in a good way. Not in the way that I want to be you (not that being you would be bad, but you know… you amaze me in that you are YOU and I celebrate that, I sit here mesmerized by it.) And love you.

I'll read your book and watch you do your thing.

You mean writing a book and being on a TV show is big news? Huh. Weird.

FANTASTIC! Couldn't happen to a better person. Really! So thrilled for you.

Will you sign my book for me? Please!

Heather of the EO July 23, 2010 at 12:40 pm

Oh yes. The signing of the books. You guys slay me. I'll probably be throwing them at you for free and begging you to tell everyone you know about them. So yeah, I'll sign them fifteen times each.

Maggie, dammit July 23, 2010 at 12:43 pm

So proud of you! It's been a sweet honor to ride with you as witness. Feel that wind in your face, really feel it.

I'm not trying out for a blogging reality show, though. I'ma hold out for Real Housewives of Rural Wisconsin.

Heather of the EO July 23, 2010 at 12:43 pm

That is. IF a publisher even wants to book in the first place.

I think I'll just believe they will. I'm working on believing.

YOu guys are THE BEST cheerleaders in all of blogland. You REALLY are. I believe it.

Corinne July 23, 2010 at 12:47 pm

designHER Momma July 23, 2010 at 2:43 pm

The book thing? Best news ever. I cannot wait to see this journey unfold.

And the tv thing? If you were chosen it would be a reason for me to get cable again. Seriously, you could bring cable back into my life. :)

Love you!

anymommy July 23, 2010 at 2:47 pm

Hold on tight, all those stars are for you. Awesome. XO.

Aunt LoLo July 23, 2010 at 2:48 pm

Mama, you are inspiring, in every sense of the word. I'm so proud, if I can say that.

You're absolutely right – you have a story to tell, and it's your story. And, out there, are people waiting to hear your story, just the way you can tell it. Maybe they've been trying to kick addiction for years, or maybe they don't even acknowledge they have anything to kick, but something in the way you tell your story will inspire them to take that leap.

So, rock on, Mama. Rock on.

Elizabeth @claritychaos July 23, 2010 at 2:48 pm

Wow — Congratulations, Heather! Big, big news. Be sure to take care of yourself through the whirlwind, Mama. xoxo

So much gladness here. Love you!

I'm so excited for you Heather. Truly. For the book, for the chance to be on the show – for all of the good and exciting things coming your way. You deserve them, believe it. You would be a fantastic choice for the show and if those producers have a bit of sense, they'll snap you up.

I owe you an email, or three, but have been thinking of you often. I can't tell you how often my thoughts go back to the words you wrote, how they lifted me through some pretty awful days. I don't want to cry at work (and I'm not supposed to be blogging anyway), so I'll end here, but – I love ya, lady. XOXO

Your book with be full of truth and beauty, I just know it. And if the reality show was lucky enough to cast you, your light would stretch that much further.

love ya…and hoping someday soon we can meet face to face.

Amanda July 23, 2010 at 6:35 pm

I was going to submit to that and chicken out… and now I am so glad I did! I hope women like you, who have a strong voice and a story to tell, are cast. I hope the show reflects the amazing will and desire to *do better* that lies within us.

I am not familiar with the trials and tribulations of sobriety, nor have I ever dealt with depression. But I am thankful that someone as eloquent as yourself will be the voice that shows *me* the truth.

I will be rooting for you!

God bless-
Amanda

You deserve all this and so much more and I can't wait to see the fireworks display that is down the road for you!

Congrats and Big Hugs friend!

Danielle July 23, 2010 at 9:04 pm

Such very exciting things unfolding for you, Heather. I do read your blog every now and again and so appreciate your honesty and authenticity as you have admitted to the world your struggles and addictions. I wish you all the best as you follow your dreams and passions.

I will also say that one of your posts is very near and dear to my heart…the one in which you admit that you have often struggled feeling that your birth experience was somehow less extraordinary because you had a C-section. I had to have a C-section in October and I have struggled with the same feelings. But your post – your words – reinforced to me that I very much gave birth to my little boy…I struggled and I labored and I had to get cut open to greet him and am so very grateful to have had a healthy baby boy in the end.

I am excited to see what all unfolds for you in the weeks and months to come!

All the best,
Danielle

Heather – you are a star. I would love to read your book. And the fact that you actually acted on something people just *talk* about all the time makes you even more of an inspiration.

I think you'd we perfect for that reality show. Will they pay for you to have someone clean your house for you though? I would worry about people seeing the filth I live in (and hear me fight with my husband about broken toilets). Sososososo excited for you – all of these opportunities. And so well deserved.

1) I am not a woman; 2) I am not a parent; 3) I am not personally dealing with sobriety.

Yet one of the first things I do when logging on to a computer is check to see if Heather has updated her blog.

Thoughtful juxtaposition of words and carefully crafted sentences are, to me, the truest and purest art form. Her musings are daily philosophy, her writing style a pure shot of poetry, her blog beautiful handcrafted artwork.

Jennifer, Playgroups Are No Place For Children July 24, 2010 at 2:19 pm

I'm so, so happy for you! You absolutely deserve this. I know your blog has helped you, but I'm certain it's helped women like you. A book, a TV show, those can only aid in reaching out to more.

Congratulations!

I count myself lucky to have known Heather since 5th grade. Our friendship grew closer as middle school, high school, and the years right after college went by. There was even a time when I felt like I could read Heathers mind without her saying a word. Then I moved thousands of miles away and we both had kids which meant there was little time for us to catch up on the phone…for all the moms out there, why is it that our kids won't give us undisturbed phone time? Anyhoo…this last February Heather told me about her being an alcoholic and I can honestly say I was floored. Never, absolutely ever, did I think that Heather had a drinking problem. We did have a couple crazy nights that we would now roll our eyes at or giggle about but I felt that was fairly normal behavior for a 22 year old…like a right of passage. I spent a few months looking back at all of the wonderful memories of Heather trying to pick them apart for any hint of alcohol addiction and I really couldn't see it. But maybe it was because Heather had a few blatant alcoholic friends and that camoflaged her issues with alcohol. What makes me sad is that even as close as I feel like Heather is to me, we never talked about this very serious issue for the years that she struggled with it. She never even hinted…if she had I may not have even picked up on it since it really never came close to entering my mind. As far as I know, she lived it alone. Somehow she had the strength to figure it out on her own and to own it and start over. Even more spectacular is that she is sharing her story with all of us and helping us learn from her through her blog. She is showing me how to be a supportive friend. She amazes me with her courage and inspires me, as she does many of you. I truly am blessed to have her as a dear friend thru the thick and thin of life! For what it is worth, I hope you are blessed with all of these new adventures in front of you so that you may help many more people out there! So what I really am trying to say is that this virtual world is important. Each persons story is amazing and unique and inspiration is found in many different ways.

Heather, I'm so excited for you – you have always been compelling and I've loved your blog for years. Your current path is compelling as well – but mostly what I love about you is that you are authentic, transparent and share your truth. I'm ecxited that you'll have a book, but even more excited that you are sober and growing and moving forward in this beautiful, crazy life.

I am so happy for you!! Writing a book and being published. What a dream!

I sincerely hope that they choose you for the show. All of us bloggers would be honored to have you represent us. =)

Anonymous July 26, 2010 at 11:31 pm

Ha ha! I figured it out! I am commenting! (Betcha' thought I couldn't do it.) :)

H- we have known each other for so long. We have been, and continue to be, witnesses to one another's "growing up". Thank goodness there are avenues such as these to connect people who might have missed the opportunity to know what I and so many others have known for years: how much blessing there can be in knowing you. Best of luck in all your endeavors, and continue to believe. :)

Anonymous July 26, 2010 at 11:55 pm

Finally, a book!! I will be one of the very first to read it. Twice. And three times. And to excited for the show! It would benefit so many people, including myself, right there on top. And I'm not ONLY excited because for years I've wished that I, myself, could be right there, a part of your life every day, following you around like your third child (you can picture it I'm sure), but because you are so inspirational, in SO many facets! I've been lucky enough to know, for many years, what a beautiful, amazing, inspirational, and, just HILARIOUS (laughing), individual you are. But try as I may, I just can't keep up on the blogging, so I'll patiently await your book, and excitedly anticipate your show, and all that I, and the rest of the world, can learn from it! I saw this in you years ago. How absolutely wonderful to see the rest of the world get the chance to, too. How very lucky they are.

Eyes Like Twins, old friend.

Mozi Esme July 27, 2010 at 9:34 am

We read you because your story is our story, just written far better than we could tell it… It resonates on so many levels. Keep writing, keep believing, keep inspiring us!

Joanne@ Blessed... July 27, 2010 at 11:05 am

Heather,

I remember finding your blog three years ago. I'd just begun blogging myself and thought, "Wow! This gal is talented."

Not only are you authentic, (duh!?), but you have the ability to use your amazing sense of humor to dull the pain in all our lives so the truth you share can go deep.

How's that for authentic?

I pray those people who have discovered your story will listen to the voice of us bloggers. We represent many many readers who agree with me.

Thank you for being brave enough to step out into the unknown. We are all watching.

…and we look forward to living vicariously through you.

Knock this one out of the park Heather!

K and/or K July 27, 2010 at 8:48 pm

Best of luck with the book and TV gig. I will read and watch every minute! I am so thankful you to little, "you should, like, totally blog Heather"–way back in the day.
I knew I would have at least one amazing idea in my lifetime!
Have fun in the big apple too!
