Just Write {31}

April 17, 2012

My early riser is up with the light. Bouncing around and all chatter and energy. He passes the hours (yes, hours) before school with Nutella and checking in on the baby chicks (yes, chicks) and Legos and Animal Planet. Today we learned about walruses. Walruses apparently get annoyed with each other and jab those big tusks into each other. The narrator man says that’s okay because they heal fast and they’re made of six layers of blubber.

On a commercial break, there’s an ad with a woman in a hospital bed. She says she had a stroke because she smoked her whole life. Her son is giving her a sponge bath and she’s talking about how she can’t do anything anymore. She tells smokers to “enjoy your independence now”.

I asked Miles what he thought all of that meant and he said that everyone should stop smoking. Then he added that if you don’t stop smoking, you can’t do anything for yourself anymore.

You need help with everything. Even eating breakfast…or planting a tree.

What amazed me about that was that he was more concerned about not being able to do bigger things even though the lady in the bed was pointing out that she can’t even go to the bathroom on her own. A six year old boy wants to be able to plant a tree and so he says he’ll never smoke. Of course, I thought. The bigger things are what make you feel more fully alive. Who cares about baths and bathroom time when you’re six. Miles knows a lot. We’re not like walruses. We inflict the pain on ourselves a lot of the time and we don’t heal as easily, our layers are less, I suppose.

He’s right. It would be really hard to not be able to plant a tree.

He’s got a point. To save the world, we need to take care of ourselves. Do you think that’s because we were made in the image of God and so to be effective in this world, we need to take care of what God created to be like Him?

I’ve always thought we need to take care of what gave us. That’s part of why I had so much shame and guilt around NOT taking care of myself for a very very long time. Now I’ve learned that as much as addiction is a choice, it isn’t. It was always so much easier for me to take care of the world than myself. People are so…human :) Being addicted is so hard. Since I do believe, I’m really grateful to feel pulled into freedom despite myself. Now I’m rambling and not sure if I’m on topic anymore, but yeah…that’s how I roll :)

Any boy that gets up early to eat Nutella and learn about walruses has to be wise! We learn so much from our little people. They don’t have all the stuff we have to crowd their thinking, the truth presents itself and they see it clearly. Enjoyed this one.

He is so wise – much wiser than I was. For much of my high school career I wanted to be part of the “cool kids” so I wished they had invited me to smoke (though they never did)… but I can’t say my dad handled it well either. He told me one day if I was ever caught smoking, he’d shoot me. I never knew if he was kidding or not, but didn’t want to try it out. :)

I just love that he brought up “planting a tree!” I mean how many kids would say that? I also love that he already knows not to smoke. Sweet boy.

Have you seen Frozen Planet? Love that show, but I don’t think they have such “after school special-y” commercials :)

Not like walruses… I must now go and look up the traits of walruses ;-) And I feel the need to plant a tree. It feels quite important, actually. I also have to get back into recording the passing conversations of my kids. I miss it.
