Just Write {48}

August 13, 2012

Asher passed me
saying
I can’t find my hair

I fight back a giggle
what do you mean, sweetie?

The hair for my guy!
he says it like it’s so
obvious.

Legos.

Oh yes,
the Lego hair.

I find it later
behind the bathroom door
so I think it’s poop
but it’s bright plastic
brown hair.

Asher’s hair is so
blonde
it’s white.

He’s not home
but I’ll tell him later.

This morning he stood
next to me
feeling the tubing
under his skin

I said,
do you know what that is?

No, mommy.

That’s the tube that goes up to your head
to your shunt
and it makes your body work right.

His little
growing less chubby
hand
rests there at the tube
under his skin
next to me
on his neck.

He looks deep in thought
and I tell him
that what’s under his skin
makes him have tools of power
like most people don’t have.

He quickly turns to walk away
saying
No I don’t
and for a moment my heart falls
until I remember
that one day he’ll know

I’ll make sure he knows.

He is
magic.

I hope my kids always believe in magic.
Because even though they don’t believe in SC (which I totally didn’t either), the magic of Christmas is still there! Even though Maya told me that I was the tooth fairy still didn’t prevent her from writing a letter explaining how Mom lost her first tooth down the sink. So please could I have my gift (even though my mother is incompetent). Brin made fairy houses everywhere on our vacation. In the woods, at Niagara Falls, on the beach at Lake Michigan.

Magic is always around us.

Love the way you interact with your kids, the way you make them sound so yummy. It makes me miss that stage of their little lives. Thanks for the beautiful glimpse of childhood.

I KNOW how important that Lego hair (and armor, if we are talking Ninjago!!) can be!

And you make me know how magic your little boy is. :)

Magic and lego hair – that’s where it’s at. Love this. I know for sure you’ll make sure he knows he is magic.

I love so much the random things our kids say that make total sense to them, but in any other context are completely nonsensical. That is magic.

He is magic.

Toy pieces are something all moms can relate to – they always seem to be something very small and easy to lose.
