A Slice of Heaven

June 2, 2008

I got an incredibly generous gift for my birthday from my brother-in-law. A gift card to Barnes and Noble of a sizable amount. Okay, I’ll just say it was over 99 dollars. How nice huh? I got to go to one of my favorite places on the planet and act rich. It was truly a heavenly afternoon for me. Just for kicks, I’ll share what I got!
-Patty Jane’s House of Curl by Minnesota author, Lorna Landvik(love her)
-Harvesting the Heart, by Jodi Picoult (we’re friends too)
-Walking With God, by John Eldredge (one of my favorite guys)
-The Red Tent, by Anita Diamant (finally own this book!)
-Grace, Eventually by Anne Lamott (she’s like a sister)

Okay so that’s a lot of new books, especially considering I have about five that were already impatiently waiting to be read next to my bed. I told Ryan last night that I’m turning into my mom, piles of books on the bed-side table, more piles under the bed and secret stashes in dresser drawers. I now understand the method to this madness. A mom can’t really find time to read, but she really wants to so she keeps pretending it’s normal to get more books.
I’ll plug away at them, usually about three at a time. And sooner or later I’ll report that I’ve finished them all! So what if it’s twenty years from now, I still really want to read them. And just because I fall asleep after about five pages…or paragraphs….or sentences…..or words, doesn’t mean I can’t try!

P.S. I am the same way about books, i have secret stashes EVERYWHERE! So many books on my To-Read list. Piles and Piles! I have been known to read 5 or so books at once… it’s madness!

I just finished Grace, Eventually for the second time…while my plane was delayed in the Miami airport. That book was the only one that kept me calm & engaged rather than picking my fingernails & climbing the walls waiting for the plane. I also just finished Harvesting the Heart…a good, but rather troubling book. Have fun! (I also have a pile of books on the nightstand…)
