OH, YES HE DID!

January 20, 2009

Posted on Tuesday~January 20th, 2009

What you are about to see is all Daddy’s fault.

I mean, the morning of the incident Ryan did spend a whole lot of time shaving his head while Miles watched in fascination. He also showed Miles how everything works, considering it a Father/Son kind of learning adventure. And then he did leave his razor out on the bathroom counter. What 3-year-old who wants to be like Daddy could resist such a temptation? Not ours. No, not ours…

So that big bald area? Mostly Daddy’s fault right? I was innocently chatting with my sister-in-law in the kitchen, unaware that Miles had moved across the hall like a sphinx, leaving his cousins to play in his room. He simply moved too fast for me to have time to notice. I’m super attentive, so I KNOW this is not my fault.

SIGH.

Yeah, that’s pretty.

When I took him to “get it fixed” yesterday, I felt a little sheepish walking into Kid’s Hair with a half-bald child, so I decided I would just take advantage of winter and keep the hat on the noggin until it was our turn. I’m smart like that.

The place was packed of course, and the stylists were running way behind. The moment I removed Miles’ coat, he reached up, whipped off his hat and shouted to the masses in the waiting room,

“Actually, I shaved my head! YEAH, actually I DID that. I shaved it!!!”

Maybe I hung my head in shame. Maybe not. Maybe I got some “looks” from other parents who wanted to slap some tape over my child’s mouth so he’d stop giving their children “ideas.” Maybe. Maybe I just smiled and said loudly,

“Yeah, HE DID!”
(sheepish giggle) (blank stares) (silence)

Nice.

Let’s look on the bright side, shall we? You know you want to say it–It’s just hair, it will grow back. Yes, that’s true. And in the meantime, Miles has a new self-soothing technique I like to call, “rubbing the stubble.” What could be better?

I’m sorry, but that’s just funny. My daughter once told her brother to cut her hair. A whole ponytail in the back. That was fun to fix.
He still looks cute. Bald little boys are cute, right? Absolutely!

Lisa @ Crazy Adventures in Parenting January 20, 2009 at 9:43 am

Oh my goodness, that’s awesome. No, wait, not that he shaved his head, cuz that’s definitely not awesome, I’d be freakin’ too, but your story, OH! the story! His proclaiming it to the busy salon. Sheer awesome-ness. Ha!

*hugs* one day, you will laugh about this, telling this to HIS children, just to torture him into wondering if he hid all the razors from his tiny pieces of him roaming around, getting ideas from grandma, heh. In the meantime, step right this way, there’s some tea and chocolate lined up for you to help calm you ;)

YKDWhat? January 20, 2009 at 9:55 am

This is hilarious. I would be frustrated.. but it’s indeed funny.

This would be a perfect story for our website, I would LOVE for it to be featured!

No, I have nothing to say about the loss of hair, actually, mostly I just want to say, “Great job teaching, Ryan!” I didn’t see a drop of blood or any sort of nick at all. THAT is what’s so awesome. That and what he yelled to everyone at Kid’s Hair. Well, those things and what YOU said after he said that at Kid’s Hair. Most excellent.

minnesotamom January 20, 2009 at 10:07 am

Oh no! Totally Ryan’s fault. :)

I took a big chunk out of my bangs with a scissors when I was old enough to know better (like 7 or 8), so I feel for the kid. Plus, he’s a boy. Shaved is a-OK on them!

Corey January 20, 2009 at 10:17 am

Oooh. Ryan should have had to take him to Kid’s Hair. Seriously.

My 5 year old shaved her eyebrows once. Just the middle part. I made her go to school like that until they grew in.

Annette Lyon January 20, 2009 at 10:27 am

He’s proud of it. That’s something, right? Totally Dad’s fault.

Jillene January 20, 2009 at 10:39 am

Hahahaha!! Sorry but this is HILARIOUS!! If I were in that salon I would have laughed so hard!!

Kristina P. January 20, 2009 at 10:45 am

Oh my gosh. This made me laugh so hard.

But I can feel for the poor kid. Need I remind you of my hair disaster, and I’m 30?

Rach@In His Hands January 20, 2009 at 10:46 am

Oh my goodness!!! That is both sad and hilarious…but no worries as he is still so cute and obviously very witty. ;-) What IS it with kids and the urge to cut their own hair?!?

Sabrina January 20, 2009 at 10:47 am

Okay, I know i shouldnt laugh or think that is cool… BUT IT IS!! It is one of the funniest things i’ve seen in awhile!

It’s a right of passage. GO MILES!

Lara January 20, 2009 at 11:08 am

Oh no! I feel for you, Mama. But now he can be like Daddy for a while I suppose. My nephew once did the same thing, at about the same age, he had an inverse Mohawk for a minute, until they could fix it.

Kelline January 20, 2009 at 11:09 am

I’ll post on hair tomorrow….wait till I show the pictures of what the twins did on Christmas break…….you will not feel bad!

Octamom January 20, 2009 at 11:11 am

Miles, congratulations.

We were all involved watching the Inauguration, fully involved in the historic day when I clicked over to check out your mom’s blog.

And at that moment, all our cable news watching ended and all eyes became focused on your scalp visage. You really went for it, buddy. It is quite something. And you just need to know, that for a moment, on this historic day, you trumped Barack Obama.

Very impressive.

Blessings!

Sarah@Life in the Parsonage January 20, 2009 at 11:42 am

He’s proud, there’s no denying it :) Those pics are priceless!

Sue January 20, 2009 at 11:56 am

Oh dear. Last year my daughter, she of the waist length, all one length hair, decided to chop herself extremely short (quarter of an inch) bangs. It was awful. My husband said “it will grow back” and I almost smacked him.

Becky January 20, 2009 at 12:14 pm

If it makes you feel any better, if I had been in the salon when you came in, I wouldn’t have stared blankly.

I would have slapped Miles a high-five and you and I could have chatted about all the crazy things my own kids do. :)

The Mom January 20, 2009 at 1:17 pm

oh the rites of passage. Luckily for my son, we shave his head to a 1/4 inch buzz all the time, so we like to say we’re ahead of the game…but of course he’s older but that’s never a good excuse LOL.

RosyRose January 20, 2009 at 1:40 pm

so sorry heather! I remember when my baby girl did that with her friend on “my watch”! I was not amused! And I have quite a sense of humor. It’s a little funnier when it happens to someone else…still no break out loud laughter from me.

Kate Coveny Hood January 20, 2009 at 1:47 pm

Oh – that is sooooo funny. But seriously Heather – thank god he didn’t cut himself. Every once in a while, one of my toddlers will get hold of a razor (because SOMEONE always forgets to put them away) and say “brush teeth!” Heart attack inducing.

Kristen January 20, 2009 at 2:06 pm

(((trying not to laugh at your expense)))

Debbie January 20, 2009 at 2:27 pm

Oh my. I know you must have been having a fit. I would have been.

Kim January 20, 2009 at 2:40 pm

Oh I love it. I’m glad you got it fixed. One of my friends little girl did this, and she didn’t get it fixed. It looks, well, like she took a razor to her 2 year old head. EEK!
I’m sure he’s very studly now :)

Steph @ Diapers and Divinity January 20, 2009 at 2:56 pm

I keep wondering when it will be my turn. So funny, though.

Erin January 20, 2009 at 3:17 pm

My husband’s clippers are out on the counter. I’m putting them away right now…

(but not before I say I’m sorry! How frustrating, and funny when you can laugh about it)

Less Toil Traci January 20, 2009 at 3:21 pm

This was not your fault. As I say to myself everyday on this mothering adventure, “I am just doing the best I can.” And you were. So now…

enjoy the stubble. smile.

emilycrowderphotography January 20, 2009 at 3:24 pm

that is SO funny!!!!! i am still laughing! i wonder if it itches?

Megan@SortaCrunchy January 20, 2009 at 3:26 pm

This very thing will be inevitable the moment AJ gets her hands on a razor or a pair of scissors. I know my day is coming.

If I had been at the Hair Place, I would have laughed and cheered right along with you!

Ron January 20, 2009 at 3:36 pm

kid learn … all the time .. all.the.time!

It amazes me how parents will tell their kids to look both ways and never cross if a car is coming and then, knowing they can make it, will dart across a road with a car coming, kid in tow .. kids learn all.the.time

funny .. the pics will be great to show to a fiance some day

Muthering Heights January 20, 2009 at 3:42 pm

Oh my goodness, I would have FREAKED out! Thank goodness he didn’t have lovely flowing locks…

Mrs.Naz@BecomingMe January 20, 2009 at 4:00 pm

Holy cow…I am laughing so hard right now and feeling terrible about it. He is sooo cute. Winter is not a good time for crew cuts, but thank goodness for caps.

Amy January 20, 2009 at 4:15 pm

Oh crap. That is classic. Love it!

BTW, Jared now quotes your child all the time. “Amy, stop your honkin'”
“Amy, quit honkin’ at me.”

It’s awesome.

Melanie J January 20, 2009 at 4:43 pm

At least he didn’t give the neighbors’ kid a haircut. THAT was hard to explain.

♥georgie♥ January 20, 2009 at 5:25 pm

OMGosh I really hate to laugh but I can NOT help it…LOL this is priceless

a Tonggu Momma January 20, 2009 at 5:28 pm

So… does this mean he will grow up to be a Jar Head like my daddy, the Colonel? (That would be a Marine, if you don’t recognize the lingo.) Please say no.

happygeek January 20, 2009 at 6:01 pm

It’s not a good childhood unless you have pictures of your self-inflicted barbering to show at your wedding.
Miles has now had a good childhood.

Peanut January 20, 2009 at 7:16 pm

Oh that is SO daddy’s fault!

Never a dull moment with kids, right?!

So, is he bald all over now? Or did you go for the extreme comb-over instead?

Jules January 20, 2009 at 8:08 pm

Oh my gosh – I am sorry but this is hilarious. :) Every family has to have a cut-or-shaved-hair story. It’s what makes family stories so much fun!

Enjoy the new look!

Tooj January 20, 2009 at 8:56 pm

I have zero words. LOLOLOL

Blessed January 20, 2009 at 9:25 pm

What is funny is that my mom was using the clippers on my husbands hair to give him a haircut over Christmas. She took the guard off to do some touch up and he went to do something else without realizing the guard was off and cut it really short on that side :)

joolee January 20, 2009 at 10:10 pm

ah, “rubbing the stubble.” that’s the best. I’m still mourning the fact that I have no sons with whom to rub their stubble.

Growin' with it! January 21, 2009 at 12:13 am

oh man heather…i got one of those out loud big belly laughs at this one! the pictures are absolutely priceless and a crack up!

kel January 21, 2009 at 9:52 am

SO stinking funny!! I love to rub the stubble on my hub’s head! it is very soothing!! hey, at least he’s a boy and can shave his head!! I can’t even imagine if Roslyn did that!

PsychMamma January 21, 2009 at 10:52 am

So did they shave the whole thing?? I can’t imagine any other “fix.” I think we need an after shot. Glad you can look at it with humor. It’s only hair, right. And, oh – what a memory! :-)

Nina January 21, 2009 at 12:41 pm

How funny!!! Kids are so quick like that… my son and his cousin cut his 2 year old (girl) cousins hair. She had these huge bald spots where it looked like they scalped her. The poor thing!!!

3 Bay B Chicks January 21, 2009 at 1:21 pm

Oh no, my friend. You may be looking at this all wrong. Miles is pure genius. Not only is he ready for the summer and spring months, but he is also taking his place in a long line of famous actors, peace-makers, and entertainers, who are also bald.

I have compiled a list to help lift your spirits:

1) Paul Shaffer
2) Ghandi
3) William Shakespeare
4) Vin Diesel
5) Montel Williams
6) Willard Scott

I am sure that you feel better now!

radioactive girl January 21, 2009 at 1:49 pm

When my now 8 year old was little, he rubbed vaseline all over his head. It probably took as long to get out as your son’s will take to grow back. You will look back on this and laugh…and maybe share it with some other mom on her blog years from now like I’m doing with my son.

Heidi Ashworth January 21, 2009 at 3:09 pm

Ah, helk, this makes my post today on the same subject look like a bunch of squashed flies. I should have gone with the cute thing the KID said, rather than the inane thing I said. Sheez!

CC January 21, 2009 at 3:11 pm

Awwww no!

We just cut 8 inches of hair off my daughter to donate and I feel like crying. Everyone says, “It will grow back”, but it’s not the same!!

We talk on a regular basis about how NO ONE cuts your hair except for the haircutter. I guess you’ve had that talk now. ;)

Kimberly January 21, 2009 at 7:54 pm

Talk about equal parts hilarity and mortification! Gah! He looks adorable in those photos though!

MommyTime January 21, 2009 at 8:24 pm

I know you don’t want a little baldie — but that’s just hilarious! And you’re right, it will grow back. And then it will be a fabulous story forevermore.

Homesteading January 21, 2009 at 9:19 pm

Reminds me of when my oldest did that for the first time… yes it happened more then once:) So far none of the other ones have followed in his footsteps. So far.

Jules from "The Roost" January 21, 2009 at 10:06 pm

I am sure it is not that funny to you but I have laughed and laughed! Like you said it will grow back if you end up not loving it! :)

Mrs4444 January 21, 2009 at 11:10 pm

OMG-That’s HILARIOUS! This was funny, but your writing made it even funnier. Great story. (Sorry it’s true, heehee)

The Mom January 21, 2009 at 11:23 pm

Oh, that is too funny! My 10 year old loves his hair buzzed, and I promised him that this summer we would shave it bald. Once. He reminds me every time I cut his hair!

Kazzy January 22, 2009 at 12:44 am

Are we going to get pictures of the bald head too? LOL Very funny. Too bad it’s freezing outside or it wouldn’t be such a big deal.

JCK January 22, 2009 at 1:42 am

Oh…my. Oh…my. But, the stories! For years to come. :)

The Thompson's January 22, 2009 at 3:11 am

Now that is PRIIIIICELESS!!

I was laughing from the picture before I had a chance to read the post. But yes it will grow out faster than you know it.

Eowyn January 23, 2009 at 10:31 am

At least you didn’t do it! I took a swipe at the back of my son’s hair before putting on the attachment. Oops!

MoziEsmé January 26, 2009 at 8:03 pm

Oh that’s adorable! Seriously! Esme’s “shaved” her cheeks, but never her head yet – so it’s definitely a daddy thing – since Daddy only shaves his cheeks and not his head!
