Asher had his MRI today. (Taking a closer look at his hydrocephalus.)
Here’s the picture story:
We arrived at Children’s and were treated with nothing but kindness.
Asher thought the toys were cool.
But he didn’t like the big blankets they put on his feet.
(They did that to warm them and prepare for the IV.)
He tried really hard to take them off.
Daddy held him and tried really hard to keep them on.
For the most part, Asher just let it all happen, not making a peep.
Then they put the IV in and it hurt. Asher cried. So did I.
When the medication was administered, he was out in about 4 seconds.
That was overwhelming.
Because a passed out Asher was then wheeled away on one of these:
Good practice for the surgery, I suppose.
He came back to us like this:
(Looking exactly like his cousin Max and dreaming)
When he woke up, he was the funniest drunk baby you’ve ever met.
I don’t know if you’ve ever met a drunk baby, but I recommend it.
Everything was hilarious to him and he slurred his baby talk.
(We had to find humor in this or I would have totally freaked out.)
Then we left, drunk baby talking nonsense all the way home.
And now he’s doing just fine.
Once again, he’s a little trooper.
A sobered up little trooper.
The follow-up with the neurosurgeon is Thursday.
The End.
_______
P.S. When they wheeled him away, we went back to his room to wait. Mr. Rogers was on the TV and one of the puppets (King What’s-His-Face) said,
“Yes, I suppose it’s a little comforting. And very disturbing, all at the same time.”
The perfect words for what I was feeling at the moment.

Poor little guy! He looks hilarious though! I’m glad things are going well.
those hospital visits are SUCH a roller coaster… watch out for the hangover! (Keep treats on hand)
I am glad you could find some humor in it. It’s tough being the mom sometimes. I’m glad things went well.
Oh poor boy and Mama. Hopefully things will go well with the neurosurgeon.
Sounds like an emotionally exhausting day. I’m glad the MRI went well. Poor little guy. I’ll bet he’s getting lots of extra attention this evening! Praying that the appointment next week will come quickly and go really well.
I’m missing your daily writings, but glad you’re getting a break!
Poor mommy. It is so hard to have our kids in pain. Thinking of you.
Evan once had to get an IV in his head; it was when we lived in China, and it was terrible.
Thank you for the update. We’ve been praying for sweet little Asher.
I’m so proud of you Mama! That could not have been easy for you or Asher today.
Drunk baby, that’s funny.
I’m praying for good news.
((hugs))
We have been praying for Asher, too. Waking up after surgery is a bit scarier. One of ours (the Big Guy, natch) had an adnoidectomy and tubes in the ears at age 2 and he really looked like he was permanently down for the count when we first saw him. It’s so great what they can do, though, to make our babies better!
I’m praying for both Asher and his mom. Sometimes these things are much harder on the mom than anyone else. ((hugs))
I’m so glad you could find some humor in the experience. SOrry you cried. I have too. IV’s are not fun for kids. He looks so cute! What a funny boy.
I suspect that was harder on you than it was on him. Glad things are moving along and they can get that little cutey feeling better. I’ll offer continued prayers for his health (and your sanity!)
Following along Heather … this is not easy but I have faith that the big Man will see you and Asher through … I think kids being put under is very freaky too … don’t like it at all!
Much love!

I never (okay rarely) cry, but oh, I did when they cathed the Tongginator the first time. And that doesn’t even compare to this.
Glad y’all made it through emotionally intact. And good on you for posting pictures of drunk little Asher. Hee-hee. THAT won’t make it in a scrapbook, will it?
King Friday!
What a cutie. You are all so brave.
So glad that first little hurdle has been jumped! I know it was the less scary one, but I hope you will feel better prepared for what lies ahead.
And I love those words of wisdom from King Friday. (I remember always liking and hating that part of the show. Now I like it more than hate it.)
At least the MRI is out of the way. Our little girl had one when she was a toddler, and the hardest part for me actually was when they wheeled her away. But that story turned out okay. I hope and pray the same for you. Maybe I told you before that I get sympathetic pains and I physically hurt when I witness others hurt. Well, I’m sort of feeling that when I read your posts about Asher, except the sympathetic pain is for you as a Mom. Hang in there…
Thanks for the update! You all are in my prayers…
I’m glad to hear you both survived! My oldest was in PICU quarantine for a few days when he was a little older than Asher because he had meningitis. Everything turned out fine but it was horrible in the moment. The nice thing that I can tell you from the other side of the experience is that when they’re so young, they forget very, very quickly and in time, it fades for you too.
I’m glad everything went well. Beautiful blog !
Sweet photos! I’m glad for you guys that it’s one more thing that’s over.
I’m cross with them for hurting him with the IV tho’!
Hang in there! And thanks for letting us know – you’d better get back to your bloggcation!
I’m glad that day is over for you and Asher. I have had drunk preschoolers (for surgery) and nothing is funnier!
I’ve not had a drunk baby before, but I got to experience this with my mom on Monday. She was pretty funny, though answering her same questions over and over and over got a little old. :)
So glad little angel Asher is doing well. Will continue to pray.
Drunk babies are my favorite. When my third came out on Anesthesia, she wanted to when I got my 3rd eye… I told her it was my secret mommy eye that she was seeing. Aren’t I mean? heh heh.
{{hugs}} to you my friend. I suspect it was harder on you than him. God bless you!
ohhhh sweet little guy and the “drunk” photo is too cute. I am praying all is well. Must have been so tough on you
Hugs and prayers for a speedy and full recovery!
I hate it that I missed this post and so many others this past week! I’ve missed your blog so much:)
Little Asher looks completely content, even if he was acting a little drunk.
I always thought Mr. Rogers was brilliant.
Aww.. Would have loved to see the drunken effect! Glad he seemed to handle things ok.
3 of my kids have had surgery. 2 of them were hysterical when “drunk” while the third acts just like I do when medicated before surgery….completely normal. I remember being disappointed that he wasn’t nearly as fun/funny as the other 2 were!
I’m glad you all got through that. I can’t wait to read more updates. Please know that I am thinking good thoughts for all of you and that if there is anything I can do to help, I am willing. (Hopefully that doesn’t sound quite as stalkerish and weird to you as it does to me when I read that back)
