Escaping

August 17, 2009

Monday~ August 17, 2009

We’ve been away.

A long drive not making good time
to the cabin
Laughing over I Spy
and having treats

Small stretched legs ran
discovering and standing in awe

Fresh air
walks through the trees
and adventures down Main Street

An afternoon movie
during a child’s long nap
Crease lines on faces fresh awake

Restless nights in not-our-beds
Small knees pressed close to my side
under covers
Exhausted sighs in the night

Early morning rises
and a puzzle done in three hours

There, at the cabin.

Out to eat and then eat some more

Rain on the roof and in the grass
Mud on our shoes and clothes
Change the muddy shorts outside
and move on

Nanny’s hugs and kisses
Bapa’s pocket with pencil and gum

French toast and coffee
and then catching up on books

Hard work, itching for release
Escaping

It’s good to get away.

I tilted my head just like Miles does
when he stops to really think,
my chin down just so
my eyes wide and looking up
just like his…

I had time to notice it while
sitting in the quiet
nothing to do but notice

Only one channel
No computer
No signal

So at peace in the rain in the trees
The not-at-home-out-of-sorts
fades away
with family and laughing
and morning around the table.

Load the car
cram in the back with dog’s breath
Make the long drive
not making good time

From his seat Miles says
I miss the chairs we sit on to eat
and I say I miss my bed
and Daddy says he misses his big black reading chair
We figure Asher misses his crib

It’s good to come home.

And now I want to do it again…

The beauty of being away never equals the beauty of coming home.

minnesotamom August 17, 2009 at 2:51 pm

I hear you–there's something SOOOO nice about escaping the house and not having the temptations to work or be on the computer. But there is also the nicety of sleeping in your own bed…so torn!

Becky August 17, 2009 at 2:52 pm

There really isn't anything quite like coming home, is there?

P.S. Your boys are beautiful.

Christy M. August 17, 2009 at 2:53 pm

I love the old school merry go round!

Looks and sounds like you had a wonderful time. Disconnected and connected.

Can I go next time?

Awww….I'd love one more getaway of the summer. That sounded yummy!

Good to be home, good to be home.

Deb August 17, 2009 at 8:16 pm

i love your poetry.

your trip sounds awesome. somehow, it's never quite so nice for us. no fighting at all? not even in the car?

oh, and yes, the deodorant is my gift to you. no need to thank me. : )

Roban August 17, 2009 at 8:27 pm

I like your poem…. I mean I really, really like it. I love it actually! It put me in the mountains in a cabin as the rain came down…. and back in the car heading home, tired but happy.

Lovely mosaics, too!

Megan@SortaCrunchy August 17, 2009 at 8:35 pm

I am so jealous (in a loving way, of course) of your escape and retreat. Sounds like summer is being well-lived up there!

Lovely shots and great collages.

JustRandi August 17, 2009 at 8:54 pm

What a wonderful way to end the summer.
I could actually feel it from your post.

april August 17, 2009 at 9:43 pm

I love this post.

I so love to travel, but I do love my house with my little yard, and my animals. Now if I could just take my house and move it to another city. :)

Haley August 18, 2009 at 1:25 am

charrette August 18, 2009 at 1:28 am

I'm so glad you got away! (But I missed you. Glad you're back.)

Love the sweet glimpses of your time at the cabin!

Debbie August 18, 2009 at 8:20 am

The older I get, the more I miss my bed. Why is that?
How's life in general. Tomorrow we take our son to college. Think of me:(

Kazzy August 18, 2009 at 8:30 am

Looks and sounds like the best kind of therapy out there! And dontcha just love little boys? :)

mama-face August 18, 2009 at 4:48 pm

ahh…what a great getaway. May I say that your pictures are just so beautiful?

Catching up on books…that is what I call a real vacation!

Reluctant Housewife August 18, 2009 at 10:24 pm

I really enjoy your poems!

I loved this bit:
Nanny's hugs and kisses
Bapa's pocket with pencil and gum

It's written the same way memories from childhood exist. Do you know what I mean? Like – sensory and with important-to-kid details standing out, like pencils and gum.

It was made more so by being followed by the more adult:
French toast and coffee
and then catching up on books

Great stuff.

I'm glad you had a nice getaway.

Kelly @ Love Well August 19, 2009 at 9:49 am

I want to do it again, too.
