You Capture and a Noggin Update

July 8, 2010

Miles – 4th of July parade

R & S – 4th of July dinner at Nanny and Bapa’s

our very own fireworks show

it was obviously quite riveting

{These photos are brought to you by You Capture at I Should Be Folding Laundry}

And now for your Asher update:
First of all, thank you all so much for your comments and emails, your thoughts and your prayers. We feel them.
Asher hasn’t had much success with that whole clearing out thing, despite our dietal (totally a word) efforts. So we’re giving it until the end of the day, hoping for a fireworks-like explosion. *ahem*
Hopefully that will solve the issues with his valve tube, things will start flowing as they should, and his headaches will disappear. If there’s no luck with the clearing out, I plan to call the doc in the morning.
The first thing Asher said this morning when he woke up was that when he was sleeping, he had a headache. This is obviously concerning, especially because he’s reporting headaches almost every time he’s been lying down. laying down? This is a sign of too much pressure on his brain, as you can imagine. Because when he is in a prone position (see how I avoided lay/lie/laying/lying there?) the pressure increases, just like it would if you had water in your ears from swimming or something.

I hope that makes sense. I’m tired. And getting anxious about my boy. I feel…icky.

Thank you for letting me get it out and for caring so much about us. It lifts me. It really does.

P.S. To be clear, we’re not rushing to the hospital because Asher continues to show no other signs of a shunt malfunction. He’s in a good mood, playing, eating (sort of), sleeping well, etc. The anxiety comes because the headaches and worsening of them when he sleeps are red flags. I’m so grateful that if this is a malfunction, we’re catching it long before he’s lethargic, in even more pain, and in more…serious danger. So thankful.

UPDATE: Since writing this post, Asher has pooped. (woot) This is good, of course. We’ll see if the pressure is relieved now. I’ve talked to a neuro nurse from our hospital and she met with a couple of providers of Asher’s. They don’t like that his head hurts worse when laying down. Lying down? SO. We have an appointment for an MRI tomorrow morning, and then we’ll meet with Asher’s Nurse Practioner again. It’s good to have the appointment on the books, especially if he’s still complaining of headaches tomorrow, after having “cleared out,” today.

You are such a great Mom to this sweet boy. You are both so lucky to have each other.

Now with all the sweet stuff out of the way, I start my Poop Cheer!

POOP ASHER! POOP!!! POOR ASHER POOP!!!

You just tell that boy there is a CRAZY lady in Wisconsin rooting for him. Pom poms and all.

MollyinMinn July 8, 2010 at 8:49 am

Thinking of you all and hoping things move along as they should today. Hugs.

Ooh little Asher will remain in my prayers. Poor little man! You (and yours) will remain in my prayers, too. How draining on you all. The worry. The anxiety! So here is a long distance mid-western mama hug from me.

Ps. Your photos from You Capture have a true warmth to them. I especially like the last shot.

Debbie July 8, 2010 at 8:59 am

You all are in my prayers. I am so sorry that sweet one is having any pain at all and that you are feeling the stress.

Kelly @ Love Well July 8, 2010 at 9:13 am

I fell asleep praying last night for your whole family. I don't want to validate an icky feeling needlessly, but I think you should trust your gut on this, Heather. You are a great Mom, and you know your boys, now more than ever.

Hugs, sweet one.

Praying for Asher. :)

sara July 8, 2010 at 10:42 am

thanks for the update!! continuing to pray for your sweet boy!

Robin July 8, 2010 at 10:43 am

Praying for Asher. I hope he is ok, and will keep you all in my thoughts and heart.

Robin July 8, 2010 at 10:48 am

Take care, all of you. Be well, Asher. Little boys [and their moms] should be dealing with skinned knees, not painful noggins.

(and I know I am stating the obvious here, not to mention calling attention to a huge stereotype, but I can't help it: I love that the fireworks audience, at least what we can see, is all boy. The poses they're all standing in are a riot.)

Sarah July 8, 2010 at 11:01 am

I'm sending good thoughts your way. I completely understand the stress of not fully knowing what is going on within your baby and wanting everything to just be okay.
Here's to the positive…his poopin' cleared all, he'll start sleeping feeling better and all will be smooth sailing from here on out.

Steph @ Diapers and Divinity July 8, 2010 at 11:04 am

I know this all bites, so I'm not trying to say those annoying 'silver lining' things, but I really did think, "Isn't it so great that he can TALK this time around and tell you what's going on?" So glad that helps you be ahead of the danger. You're doing all you can, Heather-mama, so don't you worry about that part. No mother would or could do more or better than what you're doing for Asher. He's blessed to have you.

Tiaras July 8, 2010 at 11:07 am

yes, go to the Dr for sure! and you are in my prayers!!

Becca July 8, 2010 at 11:13 am

It is always good to have the appointment on the books, even if it only helps to relieve Your headache. But we still hope the boy feels relief, and that all is well very soon.

Kimberly July 8, 2010 at 11:18 am

Poor boy – and poor heart aching you. Glad you have that appointment ready to ease your mind a little. Our girls are praying for Asher.

The redhead July 8, 2010 at 11:36 am

I feel "icky" for you. Hope the pooping does the trick. Only parents can be so interested in poop.

Andrea July 8, 2010 at 12:00 pm

So glad he seems to be making some progress. Relief for you that you have an appt tomorrow. Still praying!

deb July 8, 2010 at 12:06 pm

Thanks for the update, I was thinking of you guys.

continued prayers for tomorrow's appt.

love the pyro display, it's a guy thing in our neighbour for the May 24 , rather than Canada Day.They take it quite seriously.

and you so made me laugh re the prone thing. I do that . I was corrected once by someone who said I was making my baby into a dog with the incorrect usage.
Prone it is.

~Mendie~ July 8, 2010 at 12:09 pm

saying a prayer, hope he is better every second!

Stephanie July 8, 2010 at 12:13 pm

Great pictures! Praying for your little man! Also, my word verification is "headin"…how appropriate ;)

Rhonda Miller July 8, 2010 at 12:19 pm

Have you tried MiraLax? My 5 year old takes 1/2 teaspoon DAILY for impacted bowels. Works wonderfully. It has absolutely NO taste.

Asher was lying down.

Asher lies down.
Asher laid down yesterday.
Ashwer has laid down.
Asher was lying down.

Tooje July 8, 2010 at 12:34 pm

He is "lying down" but he lays his head down. I believe that's the rule…you lay down things, but a person will lie down.

Anyhow….neither here nor there.

I'm reading the blog from the top down, so I'm behind. I can gather from this post though, what's going on and it makes my heart jump a bit. I don't know what it feels like to experience all that you have, but when they've got an illness that can escalate to worse things, it's scary as all hell. Deadly allergies and asthmatics have taught me to never trivialize what I do not understand.

I'll be thinking of you and Ashman and the rest of the family. Relax and breathe…..things will get worked out.

Elaine A. July 8, 2010 at 12:42 pm

You cracked me up with your 'riveting' fireworks show photo! HA HA!

Thinking of you all and still praying for Asher. I'm sorry that he's going through this and I hope that the 'easy' fix of pooping works. xo

Less Toil Traci July 8, 2010 at 1:16 pm

Thinking about little Asher. Praying too.

Amber July 8, 2010 at 1:42 pm

What fun pics so glad to hear Asher is doing better.

Aging Mommy July 8, 2010 at 1:45 pm

If talking about this Heather on your blog helps in any way relieve the tension and worry for you then talk away. Did the hospital suggest using Miralax? I know from experience that this is very effective, very quickly at dealing with pooping issues.

My thoughts are with you and Asher and I will be thinking of you tomorrow all day.

Mommy Mo July 8, 2010 at 2:02 pm

Praying for more poop and less pressure on the brain….

MidnightCafe July 8, 2010 at 3:48 pm

Hooray for the poopy, but worried about the headaches and Asher. Please update us when you know anything further. ((hugs))

Jen July 8, 2010 at 7:13 pm

Oh, poor Asher! I hope everything turns out okay!

Missy July 8, 2010 at 8:05 pm

Thinking about you! Prayers for more poop and a headache free night/morning. Go get that MRI anyway, even if he feels fine tomorrow… ease your mind completely!

~beautyandjoy~ July 8, 2010 at 10:40 pm

I tried to leave a comment yesterday and for some reason couldn't – but I was sending love and concern and still am!

Lee Vandeman July 8, 2010 at 11:08 pm

The homemade fireworks show is really making me smile because that is exactly what we do!!! But we do it when it's dark. :-)

You are such an awesome intuitive mom Heather – I've been thinking of you guys a lot and I'm glad you have an appointment to get some more answers….

Sending all kinds of good vibes …

I have nothing funny to say. No poop jokes or cheers. But I want you to know that there is one more mom out here who is with you, never having met you, skin to skin.

And that connection says something. It says to me that you know how to connect; to pull me in. I believe you know how to do this with your boy as well.

I trust that you are listening. And, when listening, you know what to do, when to bump up the pace or when to relax and let the time-table play out.

With these kinds of situations the medical establishment begins to become a whole new SOMEONE in the room with a voice all its own. And the mommy voice sometimes gets lost; or mine did at least. Until I remembered. To listen.

So, I'm here saying: you listen well to the little things. That's what keeps me coming here.

I trust you. You'll do the right thing.

Angie July 9, 2010 at 7:00 am

I'm just now seeing this, and I am going to pray, pray, pray for you and your Ash-man. I'm just so sorry you are walking through this, but I'm glad he has you as his mommy to walk through it with him. I can only begin to imagine how icky you feel…

Holding you up to Jesus.

Neil July 9, 2010 at 3:24 pm

Sending good vibes to you and Asher from CA.
