1. There are things about each of my children that mirror who I am. Some of these parts are appealing, I suppose. Others…notsomuch.
One thing that Miles carries of mine is neither good nor bad. Or, maybe, it’s both good and bad.
Memory.
Fierce memory.
Just today he said, Remember that one time when I was three and that fly landed on my hand and I stood very still and it stayed there a long time. I do remember, mostly. I know he remembers entirely. That boy seemed to enter the world intent on memorizing every moment and everything. He hardly ever cried as a baby, so unlike his brother and sister, and looking at him you would have seen a furrowed and concentrated expression. It’s as if he arrived here knowing everything that was going to happen, an old soul, if you will. And it seems if that’s the case, he just can’t help but concentrate to see if what he expects matches up with reality.
Or something like that. You would see it if you could look into his eyes in person. It’s hard to explain.
These days, he’s memorizing Elsie.
His attention span is longest when it comes to looking at his sister. (Or Legodotcom)
I keep hoping that her first really big smile will be directed right at that enamored little face of his.
2. My memory isn’t quite what it used to be, but I do know that I need to remember to go to BlogHer in San Diego August 5-6. I’m bringing Elsie and we’re going to see some of my favorite people who are soon to be some of her favorite people. Maggie and I are doing the Serenity Suite again this year at BlogHer and I wanted to remember to thank everyone who has volunteered to host the suite so far. (I’ll try to remember to do a post soon letting you know who all of those lovely people are.) If you’re going to be there and wouldn’t mind helping out for an hour or two, leave me a comment or DM or email me, mkay? We need just a few more helpful friends.
3. I need to remember to calm down when I imagine flying in an airplane for nearly 4 hours with Elsie.
oh-my-panic-attack (yes, this is a good age to travel…since they sleep and eat a lot…but she also cries a lot. JUST SAYING.)
It’ll be FIIIINE.
(Hold me.)
This is Elsie saying WHO ME?
(Don’t you love how a newborn’s eyes go all wonky when they try to see? Poor little creatures, it’s so much work to learn everything.)
Happy Monday, friends.

I also love all of the adorable pink heart outfits they make for squishy, soft, cute babies. I just want to squeeze her!

You are so brave for travelling with a wee one. I think i’ve left the house with E by myself 2 times! But then again you are an old pro with those babies!!
Have fun! San Diego is awesome!

Have fun at BlogHer. I am taking unpaid maternity leave time instead of going this year. Also, BlogHer with what could have been a six week old sort of freaked me out. I think you are brave and wonderful for going. So many people will get baby snuggles, it will be awesome.

Yeah, it freaks me out too! I was thinking I would NOT be going, but with the suite, I kinda need to and so I decided to brave it. #AMTERRIFIED
Heh. I’m glad she’ll be a leeeetle older than originally planned. I sure hope it goes okay! :)
It will go GREAT. We flew a lot when Natalie was a newborn (like 20+ flights before she was 1, not that I was counting or anything). Nursing during take-off and landing helps with ear pressure, and I truly believe that’s why most babies typically fly on planes.
I’ve never been to BlogHer, but to return to San Diego right now? Sigh. If you need ANY suggestions, let me know. We lived there for almost a decade, and since I worked for several local media outlets, I know San Diego better than I know my hometown. (And I miss it. Did I mention that?)
Heather, I love you. I just do! The End. P.S; I wish I was going to BlogHer.
So, I get to see YOU and MEET Elsie while at BlogHer??? OMGosh, this is gonna be SO awesome. Can’t wait, my friend.
p.s. the photos of baby girl and big brother are so, so precious. And our oldest boys sound VERY similar…

I can’t WAIT for BlogHer! You will be prying that precious girl out of my arms. I only want to let go of her to hug you.

If there is still room to volunteer, I would like to.
She is GORGEOUS.
As a mom of an only child, I often wonder how it feels to be a mom of multiple kids and watch the bond between your children develop. If these pictures are any indication, it’s pretty incredible.
Hope we get a chance to meet for a bit at Blogher’11!
Oh I love the two of them looking at each other. I really hope to see you both at BH. :)

Oh, and I remember reading once that it can be really useful to bring a little multipack of earplugs to offer to the people around you on the plane…… Best of luck!
BEAUTIFUL photos! I will probably never get on a plane myself, let alone with my children–kudos to you! ;0) I am not a worldly person–perfectly content at home–almost too content! ha!

She’s lovely. And I love what you say about Miles. How wonderful that will be for him to experience her new smiles. :)
Wishing you well.
I don’t normally say this, but Elsie is coming…so…”Squee!”
Those pictures of the two of them together staring at each other are so precious!!

She’s beautiful Heather. Simply gorgeous. These days will pass, although I know it’s frustrating to hear that when you’re in it. My son cried a lot and he started smiling at around ten weeks and has never stopped since. Still the happiest child you could ask for.
Your trip will be fine too. I flew with my daughter to South Africa to see my parents (a 21 hour flight from DC to my destination) when she was a mere 8 weeks old. She seemed to be soothed by the airplane noise and slept and ate for most of that flight. If she’d cried, I’m not sure what I’d have done, but she did cry for short periods of course and I survived. Tip : don’t worry about the people around you – focus on you and her and the flight will be over before you know it. I’ve done the same flight solo with two (with the boy who cried a ton) and he did really well too.
So glad you’re going to BlogHer, wish I could say the same. One day. And I’ll be sure to use the Serenity Suite when I do get there. Remember to breathe and take it a moment at a time. You will be fine. I hope you are managing to take care of you a little. She will start to be happier soon and these days will just be a blur looking back.
Good luck, thanks for sharing her.
Tricia
PS : My Brian has the same memory as your Miles, it’s a bit scary at times what he recalls, little details of everything that I can’t believe he recalls. : ) Gifted, the pair of them.

AHHHH! I’m so excited to hear you’ll be going. I would love love love to meet you and the beautiful miss Elsie. Although I’ll tell ya something. You’re the third person I have read that is bringing a brand spankin’ new baby girl. And with one newly turned toddler boy and a near 3-year-old boy . . . I’m afraid the baby fever will come for me.
BUT – I will risk it. This is my first year at blogher and my first conference ever! So nervous but so excited as well. Hope to see you there!

OK I was all “I’m not going to BlogHer and I’m so happy about that” but I didn’t know I could have some Elsie time. I’ll just have to get my behind up to MN!
You’ll do great. Know why? Because you are one strong little lady. That’s why.

My 10 year old will occasionally say, “Remember when you drove the green van to Sonic, and got too close to the sign, and broke the mirror off?” Yes, I remember. I also remember that we got rid of that car 6 years ago when you were 4, and could we stop talking about it already?! They are amazing little sponges.
I flew earlier this summer, and a young mother was nervously flying alone with her baby. And everyone around her was just super nice and helpful. One man offered to switch seats so she could have more room. Everyone babbled at the baby to distract him. At the end of the flight, everyone told her how well she and the baby had done. It did my heart good to see people being supportive and sweet to a stranger. Will send a little prayer out that you have the same experience!
So excited to work the suite with you lovely ladies. Also, I am open to some babysitting/holding/singing – whatever you need. xoxo
