Pinterested

October 18, 2012

I was hungry and pinning things on Pinterest. I started pinning every food pin that looked even slightly tasty to me. It didn’t take long before I was salivating and oooohing and aaaahing and wishing I was eating all the pins.

Crock pot chili- done in 20 minutes!

Pumpkin cookie cheesecake melt-away touch-of-cumin bars!

Fig Hazelnut Ricotta Crispy Maple Crostinis!

Seven layer dip with 7 new layers for dipping!

The pretty pictures!

Then I had an idea. Instead of salivating and pinning, I could try…

doing the pins! Instead of just collecting them! You know! DOING them!

I could click open something from my foodies board and I could GO MAKE that SOMETHING IN THE KITCHEN!

So that’s what I did. I got up from the chair and I made things!

From now on, I’m going to DO the things I PIN. At least the doable things, anyway. Of course, I can’t do all of them, since it takes so much longer to do the pins than to pin the pins. I’ve heard.

First, I tried a crock pot soup I had pinned. It was boring. It was the most boring soup we’ve ever tasted. No offense to the person who first posted the recipe, but man, this soup needs something. I realize it’s supposed to be a light soup from Weight Watchers, but perhaps it needs a little spice.

So yes, I learned the hard way the first time. And by “hard way”, I mean that I had to cut a lot of stuff up to find out if it was going to be good:

Then I had to cut up potatoes and stuff too and put it in the crock pot, which was only semi-hard…

Then we all had the potato soup together at the table like good pinning families should and when I asked, Hey you guys, does this taste like nothing? They said, YES. THIS DOES

I don’t know. Maybe I did my pin wrong.

I thought I followed the clickable recipe quite closely, but I’ve been known to make mistakes before. Still, I’m removing this pin. It’s boring, in my humble pinning opinion.

After the potato soup experience, I was still pinterested in trying more.  That’s because I have a new Pinterest mission now: I have to keep my pins authentic to me, like how a blogger must keep her words authentic to her. Or else. Or else she’s just writing stuff and it sits there and it’s not really even about doing any of that stuff. You see the parallels?

So, my friends, I have carried on tirelessly in my mission to try my pins, and you’ll be glad to know that so far I am a really big fan of TWO of my pins!!!

I give you…

GRANOLA BALLS! (that’s what we call them at our house but you can call them no-bake energy bites if you want to.)

and last but not least…

the best chicken I’ve ever had in my life EVER…

I call it melty chicken and my Ryan calls it candy chicken. It’s so good and so super easy. I make it once a week. We all love it, so it gets to stay on my foodies board forever and ever pinever.

Here is some proof that I make it…

It looks weird all close up in this photo, but mmmmmm. Also. If you’re an avid pinner, you may notice the potato on the right. Yes, I did find the recipe on Pinterest, you’re right! We love the fun cross between baked potato and french fries or chips. It (they?) were tasty and easy! So I guess that’s three pins I’m keeping boarded.

I don’t know how I’m going to keep my pinning-to-trying-pins ratio even, but all I can do is try, because I’m Pinterested to see if I’m going to like my pins in real life.

Pinner….out!

(Just wait until I try the DIY projects I’ve pinned! I’ll bet you’re…you guessed it…pinterested!)

For the last few month i have pin-making my monthly menus. I noticed, like you, that i had pinned so much stuff (over 1000) and hadnt actually done any of them. So i started making menus with the stuff i was pinning and to date i have tried a lot of things. The ones we like as a family i reassign to a “Tried and True” board and right down any adjustments i made to the recipe. We have come across many that we do not like and i deleted them. Not worth keep around if i am never gunna fix them.

I love your “Tried and True” board idea! What a great way to keep track of what you liked, and what you haven’t tried yet.

I only pin desserts. That way I can feel good about not making all of them.

Someone just shared Pintester.com with me- where they test all the pins and let you know if they really work. I will say that if I pin a food item I will usually make it. And I TOTALLY stand by the roasted squash soup I make. http://pinterest.com/pin/228909593529805669/ It is DIVINE and I make it often with butternut or acorn squash. (Lately I haven’t been adding the beer and have just used 32oz of broth, btw.)

I’ve been making this crockpot soup regularly since finding it on Pinterest last year and it is amazingly wonderful: http://thelarsonlingo.blogspot.com/2011/05/easiest-dinner-ever.html

Ha! I love that you did this and I had no idea until now that we were actually suppose to make anything that we pinned. I really had no idea.

And I just pinned that chicken and potato, I know what we’re eating for dinner tomorrow!

Everything I’ve tried to do that I’ve pinned has come out well, but perhaps its because I haven’t done that many difficult things!

You’re amazing! I just pin and pin with no intention of ever practically translating any of my pins into real life incidents, but now I know I can count on a practical pinner like you….I pinned you chicken and potatoes just now…hopefully, I’ll try it out one day!! :P
