“Sometimes grace works like water wings when you feel you are sinking.” – Anne Lamott

“It’s incredibly touching when someone who seems so hopeless finds a few inches of light to stand in and makes everything work as well as possible. All of us lurch and fall, sit in the dirt, are helped to our feet, keep moving, feel like idiots, lose our balance, gain it, help others get back on their feet, and keep going…

These are the words I want on my gravestone: that I was a helper, and that I danced.”

– from Grace(Eventually) by Anne Lamott

Heather, it seems I always stop by your blog at just the perfect time. Your words as well as the music touched me more than you will ever know. I love the part about standing in the light and doing "as well as possible". Really fit me today. Love, support and warm thoughts from my heart to yours today.

Kristina P. February 8, 2010 at 12:54 pm

I adore you!

Jo@Mylestones February 8, 2010 at 12:54 pm

There's something about this extraordinary ordinary domain that makes me cry. EVERY. TIME. And I'm pretty sure it's not because you're chopping onions.
I love you.

Bina February 8, 2010 at 1:01 pm

Yes, yes.

I cried.

I'm a sap for ya…what can I say? :)

You are beautiful!

Oh stars, friend, I am a mess now… (not that I wasn't a mess before, but you know…) This post is perfect. Absolutely perfect.

Still praying. Every. single. day. And when I see posts like this, I know prayers are being answered.

Katie at A List Maker's Life February 8, 2010 at 1:28 pm

Love to you dear Heather! Thanks for sharing your heart, your pain, your smile, your encouragement, your reflection…YOU!

Kristen @ Motherese February 8, 2010 at 1:39 pm

I love Anne Lamott – for her words and for the ways in which her wisdom seems so univerally applicable. And, as Lindsey noted, I love the way in which you use your own images to help personalize Anne's thoughts to your own experience.

radioactive girl February 8, 2010 at 1:49 pm

What a great song! I think you are a pretty amazing person and I think of you often even though I seem to hardly ever leave a comment lately. I am sending you some big hugs because I care about you!

Good stuff! If you're not overwhelmed with reading, I love the book "Spirituality of Imperfection" by Kurtz & Ketchum. Part II is about AA. Peace Sista

Ellie February 8, 2010 at 6:18 pm

Just beautiful, Heather. Thank you. What a great song – I hadn't heard it before and it's amazing. LOVE LOVE LOVE the Surrender photo.

And I adore Anne Lamott. She's gotten me through some rough times. All of those books have.

Great post!

Ellie February 8, 2010 at 6:20 pm

Oh! Oh! I just realized there are LOTS of songs! These are terrific, many I hadn't heard before – I have a playlist on my iPod called "keep comin' back" and they are going ON IT!

And I just about wore out my CD with 'Blackbird' on it in my first days of sobriety. Still a song that touches me deeply.

Kaycee February 8, 2010 at 6:24 pm

Beautiful. Absolutely.

Robin February 8, 2010 at 7:22 pm

I love your new look! And the playlist. It's a keeper.

MidnightCafe February 8, 2010 at 7:41 pm

Now I'm going to have to pick that Anne Lamott book and read it AGAIN. Every time I pick that one up I find some new gem.

Love to you!

Jen February 8, 2010 at 7:41 pm

You are such a beautiful soul, Heather.

I am lucky you know you.

happygeek February 8, 2010 at 8:21 pm

That pic of pregnant Asher made my heart smile.

Amy Whitley February 8, 2010 at 8:27 pm

Just want to say I love Anne Lamott; she is wise and funny and struggling just like the rest of us. I've been reading your blog for a while now, and I admire your strength. It can be hard to be honest, and I applaud you.

MommaKiss February 8, 2010 at 8:59 pm

Oh, the things I've pondered to "put on my grave" It sounds morbid, but when one's life needs to be summed up on a headstone, that's a big task! Those words are great, and you're doing amazing!
Love the pics – esp of the balloon belly :p

Boy Crazy February 8, 2010 at 9:05 pm

I've been thinking about you, friend. I'm glad you've got some things to hang on to, to grab to tightly to give you a firm holding place for pulling yourself up.

I'm sorry I haven't been around much. I haven't been online much at all the last couple weeks. But I'm thinking of you and saying a little prayer for you right now.

Love to you, my friend.

p.s. do you think Anne Lamott has any clue how many people she helps? I swear we all think she's talking straight to us.

Hyacynth February 8, 2010 at 9:24 pm

Oh, how He does love us. It's amazing. Thanks for your words today. I want to have been a helper and danced, too, when it's all said and done.
So glad for your gifts, and so glad that He gifts us with His love.

Kimberly February 8, 2010 at 9:55 pm

You know, I can't remember the last time I read a post of yours that didn't touch my heart.

L.T. Elliot February 8, 2010 at 10:05 pm

That's what I want said of me too. I was a helper. I danced. I lived.

You've always made me want to dance, Heather, and like I told you a long time ago, your hand spans worlds. You help so many.

Elaine A. February 8, 2010 at 10:19 pm

That first photo is so wonderful. It just really touched me for some reason. Thanks Heather…

Jennifer @ Getting Down With Jesus February 9, 2010 at 12:22 am

Jessica February 9, 2010 at 2:57 am

Praying for you! It looks like you're in good hands.

kirsten February 9, 2010 at 9:55 am

I'm continually humbled by your gifts, & your wisdom.

Wisdom to see the lessons, wisdom to see the surrender as good, wisdom to find the humor, and wisdom to embrace Anne Lamott whose words reach to the very heart of it all, for each of us.

Lifting you up (because one more prayer can't hurt, might help!) and loving you. Thanks Heather.

Dedee February 9, 2010 at 3:12 pm

mama-face February 9, 2010 at 4:27 pm

Love Anne Lamott-she seems to write like I think. I don't know how much of a compliment that really is to her, come to think of it.

I love your new look and for some reason I'm completely out of sync with in my reading. (I'm sure you've missed me. *wink* I have some catching up to do!

:)

Kristen@nosmallthing February 9, 2010 at 7:14 pm

I love your new digs. :) Just wanted to tell you that. And I love that reflections photo, too.

natalie February 10, 2010 at 12:09 pm

I just love it here. I am in awe of how you are healing yourself and sharing with us your journey. I can't relate to what you are going through, but I support you and cheer you on all the way.

txmomof3 February 12, 2010 at 9:37 am

If anyone can get through this post without weeping, I'd be amazed. I am in awe of your strength and fortitude. And, without a doubt, your grace.
Thank you for this post. So important, so healing.
