Batmen and Superman Girl

February 3, 2011

They went back and forth. Asher said their sister was going to be Superman Girl and Miles tried to correct him with, No Asher. It’s SuperGIRL. He’d say, OH! and then say it “wrong” again. Superman Girl.

I love eavesdropping.

Yeah, we’re all over here just trying to figure this out. The beautiful reality is slowly settling in…
There’s a girl cooking in my belly right now and there’s no way I don’t know that because the ultrasound tech kept saying “See that little hamburger bun?!?” over and over and over…

(I will never hear “a bun in the oven” quite the same way ever again. Just saying.)

Yup, there’s the girl anatomy! WE GET IT! WE GET IT!

I mean, we were already so surprised and we just wanted to keep looking at each other saying “WOW” and “WOW” and “NO WAY” and then she just kept saying hamburger bun.

Anyway…

That is not the point of this post. It’s a random side note…because I’m good at those. The point of this post is actually a big thank you. You know what? I continue to be so honored and humbled that you’re here, visiting my Lego man and me, my words, my stories. I don’t assume you’re here all the time, we’re all busy and this is just blogging. But I appreciate every single second you take the time to check in, to see what’s up with me. I really do.

When I scroll through the comments from my last post and I see that so many of you took the time to share in this baby girl excitement, all I want to do is sit and visit with each of you. I honestly wish that I could.

:::::

Also.

I want to always remember the moment when we told the boys they’re having a sister.
They’d been out in the waiting room with their Uncle K during the ultrasound and when we came out, all three of them were bursting a bit at the seams. Their eyes were all anticipation and there was a lot of bouncing going on. (Uncle K didn’t bounce much, but the boys sure did.)

Asher kept asking, “What kind of baby is in there, Mama? What kind?!?”

So we took them out in the hall and I bent down close to both of their faces and I told them they’re going to have to work really hard at getting strong. I said that they’re both like super heros and they need to be the biggest protectors of their…(long dramatic pause)

LITTLE SISTER!!!

*cue more bouncing and more big smiling*

Then Miles looked a little disappointed, because right before the appointment he professed his want for another brother. I asked him if our news was good news and he said no. So I told him that a sister doesn’t really mean everything in our house will be pink and then I explained that she’ll probably like boy toys like he does, and it doesn’t mean he has to play with girl toys.

Then he looked all relieved and everything was fine. He decided to like having a sister.

Asher? He thinks it’s especially cool, girl or boy, that he gets to be called a BIG brother.

Of course, we’re all just super happy that the baby on that screen, with a joyously drum-beating little heart and other working parts, looks completely healthy. She’s a total Superman Girl.

FINALLY, I sort of kind of totally forgot to announce the winner of the Pleated Poppy giveaway. I apologize, I was totally distracted.

The winner is Suzannah from So Much Shouting, So Much Laughter. Random.org chose commenter #2. Congrats, Suzannah!

I can't wait to find out what we're having, but mostly to see the kids reaction! My son has already said "if it's a girl I won't love it. We have enough girls" I know it's just his 5yo ego talking so I wasn't hurt…his sister wants a girl, but honestly, she's excited to be called big and have a "real" baby to play with!

Congrats mama- I am so excited for your family. And now, you'll be just like me (with one girl and two boys) but different too. Love you!!!!

Your boys in their Batman outfits? Delicious and adorable. (How can children be delicious? I've never been able to logically understand it, but they just are.) Also, I have to say, I have found the best knitting pattern and can't wait to get started on something special for your Superman Girl. (I realize that makes it sound like it's Superman-Girl-themed, which was not my intention. Anyway.)

Sorry. I babble.

It has been our experience with having a boy first that things aren't quite as girly around here for Julia as they would be otherwise. She's much more interested in keeping up with her brother and his interests – Star Wars, Legos, Animals, Dinosaurs, Spaceships….

Personally I like it that way – I'd much rather her be learning about science than princesses any day.

Does she enjoy wearing dresses? you bet!

Is her room filled with pink?

Not a chance. Actually it's filled with beads and Legos at the moment.

BTW I loved reading about how you told the boys and their reactions. My favorite part of my pregnancy so far has been the conversations with the kids about the baby. LOVE. THEM.

Congratulations!
So glad all is well with you and baby girl. Girls are a new kind of fun. I indulged a lot of my ridiculous girlie instincts with my third daughter, things I would not buy and such with my first two because I was all about practicality when they were born. Have fun!

I am catching up on my blog reading today and just read your post about the GIRL and then this one. :) Congratulations!! So glad that she's healthy and that you all are so excited (even if it did take some explanation for Miles). :) I am the youngest in my family with two older brothers and I loved it. :) I also played lots of sports and Star Wars and tried to keep up with them. Not to say that there wasn't some Dolls and Kitches in there too, but I got to play with tons of cool "boy" toys too! (and I still love Star Wars!)

I lol'd at "hamburger bun"…but really, shouldn't it be "hotdog bun?"

Angie February 3, 2011 at 2:29 pm

I screamed, literally, when I read it's a girl! How wonderful! I can't even begin to tell you what a delight it has been this two boys, then girl saga of our life. She brings so much to this home in her little girl way and softens all our hearts. And those boys who opened our hearts wide and filled them with boisterousness, they love her to pieces. I know yours will, too. :) Congratulations, friend!

I don't think I commented the other day, because, I don't know why, but anyway– when I read your news I nearly squealed out loud. Because I am just that dorky. :) Congrats!

Oh, thanks for the laugh. Superman girl. Love that. And the hamburger bun thing. What a terrific technician you had. So good to be so technical in her gender identification and so careful to make sure you saw it. So funny. I'm so excited for you and yours!! And I sort of need to come to your house and eavesdrop, too.

For a second there I thought you'd come into my house and taken a picture! My boys have the same jammies and supplies and hair – ha!

Yay for Superman Girl! They're gonna love her to bits!! :)

I think that now I will always think of your daughter as SupermanGirl.

I love all the bouncing and smiling. They are going to be great big brothers.

Kim February 3, 2011 at 8:05 pm

Be sure to tell Miles that my girls LOVE playing Star Wars, Ninja legos and are very good at wielding a light-saber.

Love their reactions. Can't wait to see this sweet little girl.

Rach@In His Hands February 3, 2011 at 8:24 pm

Your boys are precious. Bless their little bouncing hearts. They will rock that big brother role to their little Superman Girl!

Adventures In Babywearing February 3, 2011 at 8:29 pm

I'll never forget how we found out about Ivy and then we asked the tech- a lot- "are you SURE?" are you SURE? Are YOU sure?

Yeah, some days we look at each other and are like- really?

Honestly, such a gift they all are.

How do we get so lucky?

I love these sorts of 'I need to remember how it happened/came to be/was' posts, because they're what invest all of us in each others' lives, you know? Thank you for sharing yours (and your precious boys') with us.

Kelly February 3, 2011 at 11:14 pm

Love Asher's reaction the most. Isn't it sweet that he is clueless as to middle child syndrome?! ;)

Congratulations again!

Cynthia February 3, 2011 at 11:56 pm

Woot Woo! I love girl babies (and boy babies too of course). Congratulations, that is wonderful news.

The Clines February 4, 2011 at 12:36 am

Congrats! What a lucky girl she will be- with such great big brothers!

Melanie Jacobson February 4, 2011 at 12:44 am

Hooray for girls! They are a whole new level of terrifying and fantastic!

Christine February 4, 2011 at 7:25 am

I'm kind of crying from reading this post. So awesome.

And a hamburger bun. OMG!!

Kimberly February 4, 2011 at 2:56 pm

I love that you put that story into words…that years from now your little girl might read it and smile and laugh over it the way I just did.

How awesome is that?

Nicole February 4, 2011 at 5:31 pm

Congratulations! As a mother to three girls, I can attest to the joy they bring! How wonderful for her to have two loving big brothers. :-)

Kelly Sauer February 4, 2011 at 9:19 pm

Heather, she is gonna be SUCH a tomboy, with three older brothers! Congratulations – SOOOO exciting!

Lyz February 8, 2011 at 2:25 pm

Hooray for baby girls! I am so jealous, I wish I knew what my baby was, besides a baby.
