Dan Gets a Minivan – a Father’s Day best book

June 17, 2012

With chapters like “My Cup Holders Runneth Over” and “Nanny in a Haystack”, Dan Zevin’s, Dan Gets a Minivan: Life at the intersection of Dude and Dad takes us through middle-aged parenthood with charm and warmth and most of all, hilarity. Ryan and I have seriously enjoyed how much we can relate to this book. It’s the kind of book that had us reading together…out loud, which doesn’t happen frequently and can’t hurt any marriage.

{It’s entirely possible that Ryan thinks the world of Dan Zevin because the man tricked out his minivan with flames.}

Dan Zevin chronicles his seemingly uncool life and the changes having small children will bring you through with stories that any parent will see themselves in. We understand these feelings, of being one way and then being transformed into someone who looks more like your parents than your old hipster self, falling in love with your minivan instead of caring what people think. Which actually makes us very cool, does it not? Ahem.

I wanted to tell you about this book before Father’s Day so you could gift it to someone cool in your life, but of course, life was happening at a rapid pace and time got away from me. You can still order it at Amazon or Barnes and Noble, of course, since it just recently came out. I highly recommend giving yourself a dose of riotous laughter with Dan Gets a Minivan. I’m sure, like Ryan and I, you might find this to be one of the best (and funniest) memoirs of parenting you’ve ever read.

{I received this book free of charge but was not required to post about it. I chose to post about it because that’s what I like to do with good books.}

{Happy Father’s Day to Ryan, my Papa and all of you who love the children in your lives every day, even if they make you totally uncool but still cool.}

Thank you for sharing the book and the video! Very funny! I am going to put the book on my reading list.

I never had a minivan. I refused to get one. I thought: They are not cool. But, when I got in my friends’ minivans and saw how big they were – and actually very nice, as well – I thought maybe I should reconsider. Let’s just say I never drove anything with a captain’s seat and 10 cup holders :) Sometimes my kids had to sit in the back of the station wagon (because station wagons are so cool – right?), so their friends could use the seat belts….I totally get minivans!!!

The video is hilarious! I can’t wait to pick up a copy of the book; although, my husband (now father of five) says we’ll never own a mini-van. He has tickets to see Van Halen Friday night (maybe this explains a little something about his attempt to stay cool).

I am pretty jealous of those foot rests on the seats in his van but I’m a Honda loyal so… Plus, I never sit in the captain’s chairs anyway… ;)

He’s funny. We may have to get that book!
