A fluffy baby robin bounced around our patio door like a little plastic wind-up bird. I could hear that tick tick sound of the dial on his side even though it wasn’t actually there. I knew he was a boy because bright orange is pushing through the down on his chest. He click click hopped up on a chair and stared at me, head turned for his side-eye to get a good look.
I nearly cried for him because I know where he came from, his mama’s nest is right outside my kitchen dishes-washing window. I ran over to see if his brother or sister (I can’t see the chest) was gone or if his mama was around to find him way on the other side of the house. There was his sibling, head held up high searching around peep peep peep.
I wondered if the wind blew out our patio visitor because this day was so blustery and Asher and I went out to him while I explained why we can’t touch him. Then the chickens ran up and baby bird got spooked for what seemed like the first time. Up and away he went like he’d been flying for years, dodging branches on our big pine tree and heading out of our yard like the seasoned traveler he was pretending to be.
bye bye birdie and good luck little fella. I wonder if a Mama robin has a heartache after her babies take off because it’s time and they’re too big for the nest or because they blow away on a gusty day. I haven’t seen her back at the nest since her boy’s appearance too far away from his first home. Maybe she’s out looking. If she is or if she isn’t, I doubt she blames herself for the hard parts of his inevitable freedom, like big and scary chickens or strange human beings inching closer. Mama birds probably know that’s just how it is.

Always enjoy your Just Write post. This one is no exception. Love bird watching and you had me right there beside you watching every minute. Lovely.

Beautiful! It reminded me of a time that a baby bird “fell” out of his nest on our porch what I thought was too soon and how worried I was for him – until he just took off. I was worried about your little bird for a moment, too.

Sometimes I think it would be nice to be a bird!
Fly.
Eat worms.
Build a cute little house and not complain about it.
Let your children go.
Look for them.
Then, let it go!
Do you think you can do that? AUCK! The very idea is a bit scary!

This made me think of that book, “Are You My Mother?”
I kinda hope he still finds her. :)

I wonder if it’s as bittersweet for her as for me.
Poor baby. I think about this everytime I pass a dead animal on the road. It’s a part of life they just get much better than us I guess.

Amazing, how that mother heart just kicks in and is stirred up and swirled around by babies, furried, feathered, and otherwise. My heart ached a bit just reading your words. Beautiful, Heather. Thank you for the hospitality here. I am grateful.
Loved this, Heather.

I’m not sure I’ve hit Mama Bird status yet, I’m not good at the letting them fly part yet. Beautiful as always Heather.

Just beautiful, as always my friend. (I can’t wait to get out of the muck and start writing about lovely things again.)
Also? My mother would love your kitchen. When they were looking for a new house, her first priority was a window above the sink. She always said, “If I have nature to look at while I’m doing it, I don’t mind washing the dishes so much.”

Yes, I think Mama Birds just know how it is. Perhaps we are not meant to let go so readily which is why it is so much harder for us.

We have a baby bird in our backyard and it fell out of it’s nest and now just hops around our yard. It’s so sad but maybe he will get better. I wish I could help it so sad!
