Susan Niebur ~ honoring her legacy at BlogHer ’12

June 3, 2012

There was a force in the social media world named Susan Niebur. (Many of you may have known her as @WhyMommy) Susan used her influential voice on and offline to educate, empower and inspire. On February 6, 2012 Susan passed away, but I’m not going to say she lost her battle with cancer. That phrase doesn’t sit right in my heart-gut, not when speaking of anyone who has died after living with cancer.  The word lost and Susan just don’t go together because her legacy, the way she fought to bring awareness to the world, will be kicking cancer’s ass until a cure is found. So I think I’ll change my first sentence to, “There is a force in the social media world named Susan Niebur”. That’s not just hyperbole, my friends. That’s the truth. This spitfire of a woman with a blog called Toddler Planet changed the planet and that’s why Maggie and I want to honor her at the Serenity Suite in New York at BlogHer this summer.

When Maggie and I did our first Serenity Suite at BlogHer 2010 in New York, we wanted to bring something to life that’s hard to explain. We learned a lot in those few days and we take it with us, to keep working to make the suite a place of solace, a respite from fun and exciting but sometimes anxiety-provoking social situations.

We’ve been beyond honored to have gotten so many emails and other words of encouragement from many people that found the suite to be just what we imagined–a place that helped them. But we’re still striving to always make it more–to keep the suite available for anyone to take a break and to sit in the quiet and to talk with friends old and new. We want this place to serve, and that means that when something comes to mind that will speak the suite’s message louder and louder, we’re going to do our best to make it happen.

I was thinking back on our suite in New York and I smiled at the thought of Susan Niebur taking breaks there. She even found her way to the bed in the next room (also a part of the Serenity Suite) a couple of times for a short nap. She got to stay with her friends this way, instead of going all the way back to her room, and still had the chance to gather up some energy and courage (she was a community keynote that year).

As so many of you know, Susan was (is) an absolutely brilliant and powerful voice in the blogging community and beyond. She was a small woman with a fantastically huge heart and soul–a scientist and mother and wife and friend. Her story has stretched hearts all over the place, so Maggie and I want to highlight Susan’s legacy:

If you’re attending BlogHer this year, please come by the Serenity Suite (we’ll be announcing the room number as BlogHer approaches) to share a memory of Susan, or something you loved about her. (Don’t worry, if you didn’t know her, you can certainly share something about someone you have known who has walked the cancer road.  We’ve all been touched by this disease and honoring someone in your life will certainly honor Susan as well.) We will provide note cards and after the conference is over, we’ll send these messages of hope and love to Susan’s husband, Curt, and their two boys.

If you are not attending BlogHer and want to take part, please email me (heather of the eo at gmail dot come) your thoughts/memories of Susan or someone else and I will make sure to add them to all the others.

We will also be sharing information about an organization called the Inflammatory Breast Cancer Research Foundation in in the suite. Please take a moment to consider making a tax-deductible donation there in Susan’s honor.

Thank you, friends.

P.S. If you’re attending BlogHer and would like to volunteer in the Serenity Suite for a two hour shift, please email me. We’re in need of a few more kind helpers. Thank you!

Oh Heather, I love this. It is perfect and I know Susan would be so honored to be remembered this way and to have those memories shared with her husband and boys.

You can count on me for one of the 2 hours shifts. You just let me know what day and time and I’ll be there.

I’m kind (mostly). I’m a BH volunteer so my schedule is dictated by that – but I’m open to helping in the suite.

This is really beautiful. I would love to help out. I’m still figuring out the entire event, but you can count on me for two hours, as well. :)

I am also a BH volunteer, so I don’t know what my schedule is…but I sure will do my best to stop by. This sounds like a wonderful tribute.

I should have gotten a warning before Kristen Chase sent me this link – crying at work and pretending I’m not. Thank you for honoring her this way. I love that she lives on so profoundly in all of us. It will be my pleasure to come by. (But please have tissues!)

Thank you to each of you who have volunteered to help out! I’ll be emailing you with a google spreadsheet soonly. You’ll be able to click right in and put your name in the slot that works the best for you.

We appreciate you so much.

How much do I LOVE that you are doing this. I met Susan at BH10 and it was my honor and privilege to spend a little time with her there (I was friends with her DC roomies). Perfect. Just. Perfect. And so glad I will be a serenity suite hostess this year. So happy to give back.

(P.S. I’m going to sign up for a shift, as promised, but may need to do a little juggling later on. I have no idea what they have planned for my schedule as a Voice of the Year speaker. Rumor has it there will be lunches and rehearsals and stuff, so my schedule not entirely of my own making this year.)

I will definitely be by the Serenity Suite. I never met Susan and only chatted via Twitter one time, but her presence, passion, and optimism in the #bcsm (breast cancer social media) community was profound. As a cancer surviver myself, it will be my pleasure to visit in her honor as well as make a donation to the Inflammatory Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Thank you for this. Susan was all that you say — scientist, mother, wife, friend. She was also a daughter, my daughter, and I miss her every day. Thank you for remembering her and honoring her in this way.

I will be thinking of you all in August.

Heather July 11, 2012 at 8:53 am

Pat,

So many of us are out here, unknown to you but maybe kind of known because of Susan. We’re all connected through her and we will keep you all in our hearts and thoughts and prayers. Susan was and is a gift to our community. A lot of us are moms and we can’t imagine what you’re going through. We send you peace. Thank you for coming by here and taking the time to grow my heart bigger with your words.

Heather
