Just Write {187}

May 12, 2015

While I was talking to Elsie about why she didn’t need cereal, since she had just eaten two pieces of toast and a bowl of oatmeal and we needed to get out the door, Asher was saying Watch this, watch this!

He swung one foot forward and moved it as fast as he could back and forth, like a dance. Then he switched feet and kicked out the other, throwing it from side to side. Look how fast I can do that, Mommy!

Yes, sweetie, that’s the fastest foot-work I’ve ever seen…

But he was already interrupting me to ask me to cut out something he had just drawn. Can you get the scissors? I’m terrible at cutting along the lines and I need it! It’s for Daddy’s birthday!

So I stopped and started searching for the scissors and asked Miles if he could please for the love of all things holy get his backpack ready and his shoes on, for the tenth time, please.

UUUGGHHHH. (He was busy hitting a Mother’s Day helium balloon as far as he could with a Whack-a-Mole hammer.) I was terribly rude to interrupt. Again.

In my head I was trying to remember all there is to do after dropping the kids off. Including writing this. There is a lot of writing and editing and social media work to catch up on. Yesterday was a café day and now I’m behind. In between things, I grabbed the pencil on the counter, the stubby one that will barely write and wondered again where the pencil sharpener is. I jotted down another thing to remember and then realized I hadn’t dried my shower-wet hair. Oh well, let’s go….

Then Elsie was still eating another thing and I was saying, Honey…we really really need to go so Brothers aren’t late for school. She looked at me, and I noticed her outfit again, which she had put together on her own. (I wish I had a picture. Maybe later.) It was a mismatched magical fashion statement, complete with monkey leggings, a flowered dress, a sweater with a totally different pattern and colors and winter boots. She is very proud. She feels beautiful, I can tell.

We finally got out the door, me last. I followed Elsie, who insisted on adding more layers and bringing a calculator. The boys were fighting in the backseat of the minivan. I called out to stop while Elsie shouted MOMMY!

WHAT??

I love you.

Oh…I love you, too, Elsie. So much.

Now let’s go have a good day, huh? I asked, to start again, even though it is all good just the way it happens, in the end.
